You lied.

Oh yeah, totally. :) "Eager like a puppy, like a puppet I gave everything to satisfy your endless needs." Dang.

It's funny, I didn't think Nedra with this song originally, but now it's much clearer.

Quote
The lights bright up the Christmas Tree,
Oh goody, it's Christmas Eve
I got my baby, got his family and friends
Draw another year to an end

Ribbons gold and blue
Do not deliver you
Presents pretty and bright
Don't fill this empty space tonight
Oh, if my heart were made of gold
If my heart were made of gold
Then maybe, you'd find something
To love about me

The weather is unseasonably warm
Everybody's wishing for a Texas snowstorm
Don't peek in the stocking
Don't let my mind drift
There is a missing gift

Ribbons gold and blue
Do not deliver you
Presents pretty and bright
Don't fill this empty space tonight
Oh, if my heart were made of gold
If my heart were made of gold
Then maybe, you'd find something
To love about me

You only wanted to see the gold star
At the top of the tree
Oh, I wished I may,
I wished my whole life
To shine as bright
Bright enough for you to see
The gold, oh, the gold,
Oh, the gold, soft, shining gold
You only wanted gold
I was never the kind that you could hold
Oh, why can't you see the treasure
Inside of me

I don't know when I thought it could be about Nedra, but I had a idea that it might be even though it didn't seem to make as much sense. I knew it wasn't Ty just because of the "got my baby, got his family and friends" line. Reading the lyrics now, though, it's even more obvious than what GAIW is.

I've thought the exact same thing.... it couldn't be about Ty since she mentions him in IMHWMOG. But now it's pretty clear. Wow. She must have been in huge pain to write so many songs about Nedra like this. Geez.

I'm a little surprised that the Nedra story wasn't picked up by the magazines. Maybe there's too much stuff there to fit into a nice tidy tabloid headline.

That really makes it a heartbreaking song.

My guess, is that there are agreed upon topics that came about through costly lawyers and litigation.  I also wonder, if Nedra had that much control, how much does she own and is she getting royalties and percentagge points on some merch.  It's an evil business, worse when you're trying to be spiritual and your family screws you over.  Been there for all 3.

The way Jewel handles herself and her personal life (relationships), while being true to her art - has always impressed me.

Also: In chapter 22, in the section that goes from meeting Kevyn Aucoin through the MTV Video Awards to the Tupac revelation, man, I felt her terror on the red carpet. I don't know if that's due to good writing or just the way I felt at the time, but it hit me.

...

I wasn't aware of the way (or when) she met Virginia either. That was pretty cool.

That was fantastic, the way she kept hitting the lock button. Aucoin made some killer product and his memory lives on through them.

Nedra is a sociopath, without a doubt. The way Jewel described the bit re: the vacation home? How fast she switched when backed to the wall? She broke for just a moment.

I've dealt with at least one sociopath and even with a good childhood, they are so smooth, so practiced and calculating, you lose yourself to some degree. There's a part of your mind that holds the image of that robot from the old Lost In Space series (Danger Will Robinson!!) while another part tells you that you are being ridiculous. It's similar to why even after Ted Bundy's girlfriend found the plaster of paris in their bedroom closet, as well as the fake slings, her mind wouldn't let her believe it was 'her Ted'. The rational part of her called her girlfriend, who she knew would turn him in, while at the same time sitting there in complete denial.

An acquaintance of mine, who's husband was sociopathic, literally ended up checking herself into a psychiatric hospital at the suggestion of her 'concerned' husband, who had been continually gas lighting her. When she did, he took all the money, sent the daughter to a school for troubled kids (she was a teen and had figured her father out) and got full custody of the son. He went from concerned to cold instantly. The psychiatrist at the center figured it out fast, since there was nothing wrong with her.

Dealing with people like this is just mind-altering.

That gas-lighting crap is no joke, too!  It's so common, too.  Thank the stars she had a reasonable psychiatrist and not a money-grubbing bored person for a therapist.

But, yeah, Nedra is a fu...freaking joke and I wish all the emotional pain she's inflicted on others comes back around x3.  We should have known she was legit loony toons.  Remember that weird video that was 10 minutes of her staring at the camera?  Creep factor 10.

I started reading the book while listening to the audio book and I've noticed differences between the two. In the poem My New Shape she leaves out some parts in the audio book such as "Would have lost the ranch on that bet. Actually, I did..." and "The loss of innocence for my son." and "No more submissive posture." and most glaring "I spent a lifetime being small for those closest to me, but this is not the woman my son will know."

I wonder why she left them out?

I just finished listening up to Chapter 23. Now I know why she opted to completely cut off Nedra from her life. Her mom literally brainwashed and manipulated her...

I always thought so. Something about her was just wrong. She pegged my 'hinky meter'

I swear she had a huge youtube account, too, but now there are only two videos, so that explains why I can't find it!
