I'm trying to read the book while listening to the Audible version before my free trial expires in a few days, and there's one little, big difference I noticed. When Jewel mentioned that when she was trying to move out at 15 to live in that little cabin and she noticed the money she saved up was missing, you got the idea that Nedra took it even though Jewel didn't outright say that she took it. Nothing was really said afterward. Fast forward to her second year at Interlochen and she says she gains weight and decides to form a group for those with eating disorders. In the audio version she says "I had heard about twelve-step programs from my mom when she had taken my rent money." In the book the sentence doesn't include "when she had taken my rent money." I'm guessing this was one of the things she had to edit out of the book which explains why she didn't want Howard to talk about it in their interview. I didn't understand why at the time because she actually said so in the audio book, you know? That small addition/subtraction makes a difference, though, because in the book she talks about forgiving her mom, but you wouldn't understand what she would be forgiving her mom for. It's a good little anecdote for what happens later in her career, though, which is probably why she kept it in. This is in chapter 13, page 114 - 115, by the way.

On another, somewhat similar note, I found it rather odd how Nedra seemed to move around so much. She even left Jewel, her underage daughter, who stayed in a house all by herself while she finished a school year. What parent would do that? Just leave their child to fend for themselves? Even if people were more self-reliant in Alaska it's still baffling to me. And Nedra leaves again in San Diego after they move into their cars together. How crappy, then, for her to only stick around when Jewel really hit it big. Ew.

Good catch!

I thought I'd heard that it was clear her mom took the money, but I listened to the audiobook while I was working, so I wasn't sure if I imagined it or not while I was reading it! It is p solidly inferred in the book, but I didn't read it explicitly.

I finished the book last night, so once I have some time to go back thru the thread, I'll actually start opining.

That is good reasoning for the inconsitencies in the book vs audio.  I listened to the audio book at night...so, I wasn't reading along either.  I know someone else (may have been you - I didn't scroll back) mentioned another thing that was different.  I noticed, quite by accident, that the audiobook that I have is UNABRIDGED.  That could account for differences as well.

That means you got the same version Stern had! :fun: No wonder it was the only copy they had!

Now I really think I should go back through it again...

Then it's the 9 cd version that Blackstone put out and Barnes and Noble carries.

Good catch indeed.

One thing I noticed is that in CDTD Jewel mentions her mother suggested that she moves into a cabin by herself like a sort of a lovely, fun idea by the cool parent. On the contrary, in NB she says something like "what kind of parents suggests that to a 15 year old?"
I didn't reread the whole book though, just some bits here and there.

Disclaimer: I used to hate it when people say this...but....

Man, views on that kind of stuff really changes when you grow up and/or have kids of your own!

I was reading some thread on the internet where all these teenagers were complaining about their parents and how they all wish they had more freedom and they hate their parents asking so many details about where they're going, what they're doing, who they'll be with and I'm like, "that's what parenting is, kiddo.  If they didn't do that, they'd be terrible parents!" but you know what?  When I was a teenager up through half of my 20s even, I'd have agreed with the teenagers!  Now that I'm getting to be old as dirt, I'm on the parents' side!

I've already outlived my mom, so I'll never know on that one. And my dad and I are so dynamically different that I know I won't turn out like him in the least.  He's definitely a black sheep of the family, bless him.

My mom was a flighty hippie-type, so that ain't happening!

BUT, I have wound up having a lot more in common with my extended family than I ever thought possible, so it's happening!!  :fun:

I have the DVD/MP3 version and am doing as Angel Eyes said, following Jewel in the audio book and reading along, but have not gotten that far into the book yet. Will be looking for the Nedra reference in chapter 13, page 114 & 115.  :jewelsmilie:

Well, hey there! I'm sort of back. The lady I'm dating loves to read, and I gave her a copy of Never Broken. She's still reading devouring it (Chapter 12) and it has just blown her away. I may have created a monster! We've watched videos and listened to PUtP too. She has suffered some losses in her life, and I forgot to warn her before The Shape of You came on. It broke her into little pieces. I'm kind of tearing up thinking about it now. But it's all good; she's loving this stuff.

I can't get onto the board from the laptop at her place, and can't figure out why just yet. Working on it...
Hey Randy!  Is this ladyfriend of yours wearing the Jewel t-shirt on the regular now?   ;)

Errr...oops. No. Different lady.  :w

I'm not asking for the shirt back, though. That's probably bad form.

I'm missing being here something fierce. I'll figure her laptop out soon, hopefully. Or maybe come home once in a while...

I just read the foreword and the first 2 chapters. Jewel has a nice writing style, it reads easily and makes you want to read more. Already looking forward to read the rest. Perhaps a few chapters this weekend.

Take from the poll thread:

The latest chapter I listened to today was describing how the guy at the job wouldn't pay her because she'd turned him down the day before, and he then ignored her the next day. I was fully expecting that Nedra was going to march her back down there and demand she gets the money she rightfully earned, so was quite astounded (and frustrated) when she simply suggest they just live in their cars. Sheesh.

You know, this is one part I found curious. In Chasing Down the Dawn she mentions how Nedra was furious and demanded the money from Jewel's boss, but in Never Broken it's completely glossed over to make it seem as though Nedra simply suggested to move into their cars together without a second thought about the money. So what's the truth? Both, I guess? I don't know. It's just kinda odd how the same story is written in different ways. Well, not really odd as just jarring. I was expecting at least a passing comment about how Nedra went to confront her boss, but nothing.

In Chasing Down the Dawn, Nedra was a hero and was portrayed as such.  In Never Broken, she's the villain.

Then, homelessness was a fun little thing she did to devote her time to music and getting discovered - now it's a tragic story where her life was at risk every day and she needed to sing songs to buy carrots.

I don't mean to say Nedra isn't a bellend - she is - but ... bah, I'll wait until the new website comes online to go further.

I have the impression that in CDTD things have been sweetened. But the idea of Nedra as the hero no, I think that was real at the time.
I also have the impression she is even worse than she appears in NB...
