I figured some of these might not necessarily be related to the book or album. So...

If you find it, post it!

Here, I'll go first.  ;)

Featured Artist: Jewel (Part 1)
Published On August 18, 2015 | By Brendon Veevers

Throughout the 90′s, Alaskan hitmaker Jewel ignited something very exciting and unique in the singer-songwriter movement. Through the release of several records the musician scored a myriad of chart placing records and hit singles including her most successful to date, 1995′s Pieces of You. Over the course of a decade, Jewel rode a very successful wave and, along with fellow icons including Alanis Morissette, Lisa Loeb and Sarah McLachlan, helped pave the way for a new generation of musicians, propelling the ladies to the forefront of mainstream pop culture.

During the mid-to-late nineties Jewel remained one of the most influential acts in music thanks to a plethora of hit singles including Who Will Save Your Soul, Hands, Foolish Games, You Were Meant For Me and Standing Still but it wasn’t just the pop domain that the singer conquered. Never one to be restrained by a single genre, Jewel has often experimented with different styles and dipped her toe outside of her successful pop field and we witnessed this with her successful transition into Country music with the release of 2008′s Perfectly Clear, a release that provided further evidence that Jewel is no one trick musical pony.

While Jewels return to mainstream pop has been a long time overdue, the singer is preparing her latest studio album which is set to be released in September – but its not just any regular release for the musician. The record, appropriately titled Picking Up the Pieces, has been described as a bookend of sorts to the superstars 1995 debut album, Pieces Of You, which also celebrates its 20th Anniversary this year. Going back to her folk/Americana roots, Picking Up The Pieces is surely set to become one of 2015′s most anticipated releases, along with the return of one of pop music’s most successful and talented staples. Join us over the next couple of weeks as we celebrate the career of Jewel in the lead up to the release, and our review, of the musicians latest studio album – Picking Up The Pieces. Check back with us soon for the 2nd part of our Featured Artist spotlight on Jewel!

Renowned For Sound
Featured Artist: Jewel (Part 2)
Published On August 25, 2015 | By Brendon Veevers

2015 is a particularly important year for Alaska singer-songwriter, Jewel. As we not only get closer to the upcoming, highly-anticipated release of her twelfth studio album, Picking Up the Pieces, this year the musician also celebrates the 20th Anniversary of her most successful record – her debut 1995 collection, Pieces of You.

Pieces Of You catapulted Jewel into the pop stratosphere and onto the international stage thanks to a string of hit singles that the release unfurled onto an audience that couldn’t get enough of the singers syrupy, versatile and innocent vocals along with her effortlessly poetic approach to songwriting. Over the course of the last 20 years Jewel has released a dozen records and numerous singles so to name a favourite is a pretty hard task but we were brave so we gave it a go.

As we celebrate the release of Picking Up The Pieces which lands next month, we thought it only appropriate to look back at the career of Jewel – Renowned For Sound’s Featured Artist and today we look back at the musician’s most successful and timeless hits. Join us as we countdown our personal 5 favourite hits from the extensive Jewel catalogue….

No one's reviewing this album.  There's no buzz.  No news outlets care that it's on Pandora early.

This whole industry is so contrived and it's disappointing.  No wonder it's so hopeless being a true independent artist - even if you're already a rock star.  I hope there's more press acknowledgement come the official release date.

If there was a proper record label behind this record, it would be everywhere right now.

Jewel in the frown
‘Foolish Games’ singer releases post-divorce album

New York Post 8 Sep 2015 By LARRY GETLEN

As she recorded the track “Love Used To Be” for her new album, Picking Up the Pieces, available Friday, the singer Jewel faced an unusual challenge: She was unable to stop crying.

“This is a very raw, very emotional record,” she says of the new album, recorded as her marriage to rodeo star Ty Murray was crumbling. (The two announced their divorce last year.)

“I wrote ‘Love Used To Be’ as a eulogy for the marriage,” says Jewel, 41. “I think I ruined seven takes. In general, I only do two takes of each song. But for this, I kept crying so much during the recording that I kept ruining takes, and had to come back to it later.” Listening to the song, the album’s leadoff, which addresses the sadness of broken love, one hears her despair, her voice building from an almost conversational tone to a heartbreaking keen, evocative of loss as she cries, “I’m alone” and “I’m lost at sea.”

For Jewel, who wrote her first song and, subsequently, first hit at 16, the contemplative “Who Will Save Your Soul,” sharing her darkest emotions in song has always been part of her healing process, noting, “Songwriting has always been cathartic for me.”

Picking Up the Pieces, which will be released just days before her memoir, “Never Broken,” includes songs Jewel has written throughout her career. Some, like the lilting “His Pleasure Is My Pain,” a detailed account of a breakup in progress, were written when she was about 18. “A lot of older songs took on a much more current poignancy because of what I was going through,” she says, referring to the collapse of her marriage. And the heartache: “I let it be very evident in the performance of the song. It’s a very raw, very emotional record.”

Jewel and Murray were married for six years and together for 16, and have a son together, Kase, now 4. Since their divorce, the excouple has vacationed together with Kase. Jewel explains that, because they’ll be raising a child together, Murray still holds — and will always hold — an important place in her life. “The man I fell in love with is still that person. He didn’t change so completely that he’s not a person I can respect and admire, even if it’s not in a romantic way,” she says. “We have a child together, and it would be incredibly selfish for either of us to not [make an effort to] have a friendship. That would be incredibly shortsighted. We’re in a relationship forever, because of our child. The nature of that relationship changed, and it takes a lot of care and mindfulness to help that transition. But you don’t get to burn it down. You don’t get to walk away.”

I changed the (screwed up) formatting in that article, mostly to suit myself!

Whatever happened to paragraphs?

And, the review: http://www.allmusic.com/album/picking-up-the-pieces-mw0002868385

Thank you. I've been awaiting this one for some reason. I recall that Erlewine hasn't really liked Jewel's albums much, and I sort of cringed as I began reading it, but...
Quote
Picking Up the Pieces contains a not-so-subtle allusion to the title of Jewel's 1995 debut Pieces of You. Twenty years later, the singer/songwriter is acknowledging how she's strayed from the folky fragility of her beginnings and is now ready to reconnect with her roots, going so far as to sign with folk label Sugar Hill for Picking Up the Pieces. Over the course of this hour-long effort, Jewel does find some space for guests -- Rodney Crowell shows up on "It Doesn't Hurt Right Now," Dolly Parton on "My Father's Daughter" -- and there are gentle accouterments like moaning sitars, full rhythm sections, and gliding pianos, all arrangements that are felt more than heard. Despite these gentle touches, Picking Up the Pieces feels unadorned but not necessarily simple. Often, it's possible to feel the weight of the two decades dividing Pieces of You and Picking Up the Pieces, usually in the loss of Jewel's naivete. On her debut, she felt youthful and instinctive, but on this, her 12th album, she relies on craft, sculpting the songs so they recall a younger version of her. This tactic has its drawbacks -- usually lyrical, with the "you like to read scientific magazines like Vanity Fair/there was a well-written article about serotonin in there" on the sweetly cynical "Plain Jane" typifying her heavy-handed touch -- but melodically she's a stronger writer now than she was then and a better recordmaker, too. All those naïve rough edges were ingratiating on Pieces of You, but they'd seem affected on a mature Jewel, so her decision to return to the form but not the sensibility of her earlier music is what makes Picking Up the Pieces a successful neo-comeback.

31/2 stars out of 5.

EDIT: Not surprisingly, I mis-remembered the facts. GAIW and 0304 both got 41/2 stars: POY, S&W and This Way 4. Just forget I said anything!

http://www.cp24.com/entertainment-news/jewel-details-struggles-with-family-divorce-and-debt-in-new-memoir-and-album-1.2569981

NASHVILLE -- Most people know Jewel's rags-to-riches story -- growing up on an Alaskan homestead, getting discovered as a homeless teen in a California coffee shop, going platinum on her debut album, "Pieces of You," a folksy anthem in the grunge era.

But as she reveals in her new memoir, "Never Broken," and a companion album, "Picking Up the Pieces," her story didn't have a fairytale ending.

"I've always been very transparent as an artist," said the 41-year-old singer. "I've been known throughout my career to share a lot. But I think people will be quite surprised by what is in the book. Honestly, I think the biggest setbacks I faced were after I became famous."

Difficult and sometimes painful family relationships led her to become mostly independent as a teenager, crafting her skills in bars and coffee shops. She writes that her father was physically and verbally abusive to her and her brothers, which she attributes to his drinking and his own personal trauma. They have since reconciled.

"I think that anybody that reads the book won't consider this a salacious book, but it is incredibly forthright," Jewel said. "My dad gave me permission. ... My dad grew up in an abusive household. My dad became abusive. ... What are cycles of abuse and what kinds of conversations can we have in America about emotional patterns?"

She also details how her mother took control of her finances and subsequently led her into debt despite selling millions of albums, according to the book. The two stopped talking in 2003. The final chapters of the book describe her romance with champion rodeo cowboy Ty Murray, who she married in 2008 and had a son with, and their divorce last year.

"My life has been setback after setback after setback," Jewel said. "And it's been about learning how can I stand up and not just survive, but how do I thrive? How do I become more loving, more yielding, more whole, instead of letting this damage me and make me more brittle and more unable to experience love and trust."

On the album, she dives deep into those relationships on songs like "My Father's Daughter," a duet with Dolly Parton, and "Family Tree," about learning to live with her family's legacy.

"My mom isn't a villain," Jewel said. "My dad isn't a villain. People get some things right and people get some things wrong. And the song for me, 'Family Tree,' is about looking at that. I think the line is, 'To take the fruit and choose the seeds you want to scatter into the wind."'

While it's not a happily ever after kind of book, Jewel closes the memoir with inspirational guidelines that helped her recover and rebuild her life.

"I am not unique in my pain and my struggles," Jewel said. "If the things that I learned, and it took me 40 years and a lot of pain to learn, can help anybody else in a shorter time, it would be very worthwhile."

Canadian press in the house!

That article must have originated at the media show Jewel did at The Standard recently, because she gives the same quotes here, but...this is A VIDEO (!!) with performance clips of Everything Breaks and My Father's Daughter!

This is so typical of a Jewel release.  Every artist that released the day she did have "trended" somewhere, except here.  Even freakin' Don Henley.

Maybe after Howard....

I actually can't wait for Howard's interview. His fans seem to like Jewel, plus he gets her to open up more. Remember when he tried so hard to get her to talk about her mom? He's gonna have a field day now!
