PUTP Sales
« on: September 16, 2015, 07:19:48 AM »
Keeping track of PUTP sales!

I'm just hoping Jewel will stay in the Top 20 when sales are final! I was afraid she would not even be in the Top 50!

Cool! I wasn't expecting anything big at all, but to be this moderately successful with relatively little promo is pretty good. Hope the sales keep up. :)

Would be nice to see Jewel have another top 10 album especially without a proper radio single or music video. Sad that Sweet and Wild was #11 and someone refresh my memory was it in the 30,000s or somewhere around there?  She could possibly get #11 again and only sell around 8,000.. Sad that the numbers won't match but that also was 5 years ago!

I can't believe how little #1 is selling. Are these the final numbers? And are these physical sales only? I'd imagine that digital sales would bump the number up a bit.

These are NOT Billboard's numbers, those can be a little different, but not much usually. So Jewel is #16, with 11,6k units sold, which is pretty good considering the lack of radio single, music video and very little promotion. Just compare to rest of the chart, the industry is dying! Leona Lewis is opening at #29 and she had way more promotion than Jewel. Top 20 is fine by me!

Top 20! That's pretty good! I really wish Jewel had gone with a major label for the release of this album, imagine what more promo could have done - and I mean print and digital promo, not necessarily a promo tour.

I also wish that proper singles had been decided on and released. My Father's Daughter, whilst a beautiful song, is pretty crap single choice. The only reason it was released was because Dolly Parton featured on it.

Everything Breaks, Plain Jane, Here When Gone, and Pretty Faced Fool are good single choices. Love Used To Be would also have been an unusual and effective single, although it's a bit long. As a promo single it may have been good. They wouldn't have lighted up the charts but a major label would have been able to get some radio play happening to bring more awareness to the album and they'd have been able to play towards the "Jewel returns to her folk roots."

Yeah, they changed it within the last year or so, so it's pretty new. They talk about it here:

http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6320099/billboard-200-makeover-streams-digital-tracks

The updated Billboard 200 will utilize accepted industry benchmarks for digital and streaming data, equating 10 digital track sales from an album to one equivalent album sale, and 1,500 song streams from an album to one equivalent album sale. All of the major on-demand audio subscription services are considered, including Spotify, Beats Music, Google Play and Xbox Music. Current artists likely to benefit from this change in methodology include Ariana Grande, Hozier and Maroon 5, among others, as their streaming and digital song sales have been outperforming their album sales in recent weeks.

"Adding streaming information makes the chart a better representation of music consumption activity," says Silvio Pietroluongo, VP of charts and data development at Billboard. "While an extremely valuable measurement, album sales would mostly capture the initial impulse only, without indicating the depth of consumption thereafter. Someone could listen to the album just once, or listen to one track or a number of tracks 100 times. We are now able to incorporate those plays as part of an album consumption ranking throughout one's possession of an album, extending beyond the initial purchase or listen."

Apparently PUTP will fall to #26 if you count streaming and not only sales. I'm not sure if Billboard takes streaming into account, we'll see.

They do, but they should have a separate chart for just album sales. I'm on the site right now and can't seem to find it but I'm pretty sure I've seen it before.

Oh, here we go. Had to do a little googling.

http://www.billboard.com/charts/top-album-sales

According to that Five Finger Death Punch was #1, but on the regular chart The Weeknd was #1.

http://www.billboard.com/charts/billboard-200

So, I guess it can be a good and bad change depending on who you like. :shrug2:

Oh, and I think I was getting it mixed up that YouTube counted toward the Billboard 200. YouTube views count toward the Hot 100 songs, but not albums. Makes sense even though it kinda sucks.
