Boarder reviews of Picking Up the Pieces

Here are a couple that were already posted:

The only song I'm not loving is It Doesn't Hurt Right Now. It feels like Jewel's a feature artist on someone else's record.

Every other song I'm really loving.

Love Used To Be might just be my new favourite Jewel song. The ending is just gut wrenching and it does sound a little theatrical but I love it. My only complaint is that it's too short, it could have used an extra chorus or another verse or two lol.

A Boy Needs A Bike I feel has lost some of its charm. One of the performances from the Starlight Cafe concert series is my favourite and I wish she'd kept the phrasing like that but ah well I'll get used to it.

Everything Breaks is as close to the live versions as any other 'old' song on the album.. OOH.. I love the little new bits of melody after the chorus, they're already programmed into my brain.

Family Tree is a cute little song. After she sings the verse and chorus about her father does she say "mother" or "lover". I'm guessing she says mother. In any case it's a pretty song. I have a feeling it will be one of those forgotten songs though.

It Doesn't Hurt Right Now is an alright song and I like Jewel's parts but I'll probsbly end up skipping it when I get the album.

His Pleasure Is My Pain; I'd never heard the song until recently. When I first saw the track listing I went back and listened to it from some angelfood and really liked it. I love the semi spoken parts, it's like a mixture of song and poetry.

Here When Gone is perhaps one of the biggest surprises. I love the production on this. I think this track has the most commercial appeal.

The Shape Of You is far more emotional on this album than that other single that was recorded, I never really enjoyed the single but this version is like the live versions. Emotional and beautiful.

Plain Jane took a few listens before I really started to like it. I didn't like the staccato style singing but I've got used to it and tap my feet now when it's on.

Pretty Faced Fool was my favourite song out of this and My Father's Daughter but since finding out that Jewel didn't write it I like it less lol. I'll forever love the "I think it's time I let you know" line.

Nicotine Love; the strings are what do it for me in this song. I'm yet to listen to the song properly but I'm always humming the strings after 'nicotine loooooooove'.

Carnivore's "new" bridge is dreadful, compared to the red riding hood one I'm used to. This "new" bridge is a little too Stronger Woman for me.

My Father's Daughter is a great song but I still think it should have been left to a solo arrangement, having said that I do like the way Dolly sings her parts.

Mercy; I haven't listened to this properly but I love the emotion. It's palpable not just in this song but throughout the whole album. That long falsetto part is just 😱.

Wasn't there supposed to be live recordings on this album? I don't any of them are live versions from the Soirée?? There's no applause like POY at the end of live cuts.

Here is my review :) All in all this is a great album. Very Jewel! I'm sentimentally attached to THis way so it stays my all time favorite, but this one will be playing in my car for a long time!

Love used to be - this is a potent song. I could hear Jewel break a few time in it. Sad, but great! If there were to give a grammy for art not commercial stuff... this would win it!

Boy Needs a Bike – I like the new arrangement quite a lot, except at the very end. I don't know why but  it makes me think of an urban scenario. I always imagined the Boy living a suburban life...those sounds at end are more urban sounds... it just doesnt fit with the song. It still is one of my favorites

Everything breaks – this song is like Carnivore – if only acustic its great anyway.

Family Tree – like it the way it is, very good song

His pleasure is my pan – the production remained true to the original as we know it. Like it

It doeasnt hurt right now – its not a Jewel song and you can hear it. Dont like it really. Not going to relisten.

Here When Gone – as oppose to Jewel not sure it has found its place yet. It seems like two songs in one...it changes at one point... dont like it

The Shape of you – like it the way it is, very Jewelish

Plain Jane  - like it a lot, its totally old school Jewel. Also one of my favorites.

Pretty Faced Fool – I would have cut off the first verse, other then that its a beautiful song, grammy material I think...and I thought that about Satisfied too

Nicotine Love – there are parts that make it sound like a happy song... hmm but the very end is cool..breathe you in.. like it!

Carnivore – like it!

My fathers daughter - ok

Mercy – just lovely. this is really „Hands“ and „Life uncommons“ lovechild!

Violet Eyes – love it

I like this record!  Over the weekend, the shine wore off a little and I think I can review this fairly now.

I had the mister listen to it, which also helps me be more objective.  He said he’s impressed she produced it and that was about it. Otherwise, he said it sounds just like any other Jewel record. He will not be tuning in again.  :lolsad:

My number one take away is Jewel should do a storytelling concept album.  Apparently she’s ready for it with as much over-dramatized vocal improvisation there is in many of these songs.

1. “Love Used To Be”
Great album opener! That being said, I cringe a little at the “now I’m alone and I’m lost and I’m adrift at sea” part, but it’s okay.  It fits.  Honestly, I wasn’t as hot on this song at the soiree as others were, but it sounds p god on the record. 8/10

2. “A Boy Needs A Bike”
I was prepared to tank this song after I heard about the change to 4/4 time at the soiree, but the riff is cute and fits with the feel of the song.  I like it enough. 8/10

3. “Everything Breaks”
Sorry, I still prefer the dark, simple bonus track off the POY vinyl.  :hide: 6/10 … will probably supplant the original version in my playlist.  You know what? It fits really well with the feel of the album, too.

4. “Family Tree”
Beautiful!  It fits so freaking well with the tone of this record.  There’s a weakness in Jewel’s voice on this recording that really makes this song great. 9/10

5. “It Doesn’t Hurt Right Now”
I love this song.  I love the sound of a broken old man in a recording.  It reminds me of Johnny Cash’s version of hurt mixed up with something out of a 1970’s Andrew Lloyd Webber track. There’s a goofy lyric about having a guy fill her which is awkward, and the “oh won’t you give it to me” doesn’t fit, so I won’t give this a perfect score. 9/10

6. “His Pleasure Is My Pain”
I choked up a little hearing this one in the ear buds.  I really, really, really love this song and the production is perfect.  “Yes it’s true I’m too sensitive but he takes pleasure in my pain,” has always been one of my favorite Jewel lyrics.  All of us have family problems and this one makes me think of my dad.  Super ouch.  10/10 song all day long.

7. “Here When Gone”
I love the dusty shuffle of the verses in this, but the western twang of the chorus is a bit much.  I know Jewel said she felt it was two different songs, but I don’t agree completely.  I don’t hate the arrangement, but I prefer the acoustic version still. 7/10

8. “The Shape of You”
Great song, clean recording.  I think I already have this recording and if I don’t, I basically do.  This one was ripe for production, I though.  Missed opportunity. I love the song, so it’s 9/10, but the lack of attention the song got in the studio got drops it to 8/10 because I expected more.  Should have busted out a piano or a cello or something for this one, I feel.

 9. “Plain Jane”
I know this is a new song, but I keep hearing it as 501 Beauty Queen and I love that song. I hope this doesn’t mean that 501 is going the way of Ain’t No Looking Back.  Cute song and it fits well.  The vocal distortion on this is weird, but I’m sure it’s symbolic of something… 8/10

10. “Pretty Face Fool”
I freaking love this song and it’s the only one the mister actively likes.  This is  the only track on the album that has radio potential, I think, because the chorus is quite the little earworm. Kip Moore is a talented man! 10/10

11. “Nicotine Love”
I think this is perfect – absolutely perfect.  I love the creepy breathing at the end, too.  I didn’t hear any weird screams in the end like the folks on Twitter have. I love the Dylan-esque harmonica on this track and the heavy jazz bass – every genre of music possible had a swing at this track and I love it. I can’t WAIT to get my hands on the lossless copy so I can hear all the neat little noises she put in this track.  Pretty sure I can hear something in the background, though … maybe crowd cheering? Anyway, 10/10

12. “Carnivore”
I feel like Jewel put this on here to get us to stop whining for this song to be on an album.  I’ve heard multiple band versions of this song and yet we went acoustic for this?  Sounds like a ploy to sell a bonus version. This is a 10/10 song for me and  this is a clean, albeit boring, recording of the song. I give the album version  /10 because I don’t hear a single drum or bass.

13. “My Father’s Daughter” (feat. Dolly Parton)
I skip this one.  I guess this is an attempt to get other people besides us to listen to the album. Love the song, but I officially hate this duet. I give this an even 5/10 and I’ll be supplanting the studio version we got from jeweljk.com some years back.

14. “Mercy”
This song is the PERFECT album closer. “I have broken wide open” is a great way to end this era of her life and begin a new one.  It also segues well into the new self-help book/website/one woman shows she wants to start doing.  Fingers crossed that this doesn’t become all contrived and made for daytime TV.  This is a review of the song and its recording and I give this one a 10/10.

That means the whole record is an 8.4/10 for me, which puts it behind my two favorite Jewel albums, POY and Spirit, both of which I rate a solid 10/10.

Love Used To Be -

A Boy Needs A Bike - like the new mix

Everything Breaks - It's not bad. The old live recordings just seem to have so much more emotion. I like them better.

Family Tree -

It Doesn’t Hurt Right Now - Eh, I'm not sure what I think of this one yet.

His Pleasure Is My Pain - Never thought we'd see this on an album

Here When Gone -

The Shape of You - The 10-20 seconds I listened to seemed ok. I still can't listen to this song since my mother passed. :(

Plain Jane -

Pretty Face Fool -

Nicotine Love - It's good I just prefer the old live ones loaded with angst.

Carnivore - Good, needs a band.

My Father’s Daughter - Sorry, Dolly. I only have eyes for one set of musical boobs  :jewelboobies:

Mercy -

So, I rate it a solid

Okay so I've only listened twice. But here's my two cents:

1. Love Used To Be - Great.... a wonderful opener, it sucks you in and you want to listen to more!

2. A Boy Needs A Bike - Good version. I know I'm in the minority, but I actually like it more than other versions I've heard.

3. Everything Breaks - I've always loved this song. Even though it's not quite as dark as the original version I have, she still does a good job.

4. Family Tree - Very, very pretty. Love the chorus. Songs like this make me want to go pick up my guitar and start playing.

5. It Doesn’t Hurt Right Now - As I said in another thread, I can't seem to be able to download this. I'm going to have to wait until I get the CD to comment.

6. His Pleasure Is My Pain - I've always thought this song was a bit weird. I've never liked the talking part. Just sing, already. Having said that, the lyrics are great.

7. Here When Gone - Not bad.  I don't get the way the chorus sounds so much different than the rest of the song. Its like it just switches to a different song completely. I haven't decided yet if it works or not.

8. The Shape of You - Absolutely beautiful. Got very teary listening to this.

 9. Plain Jane - Love it. Very catchy.

10. Pretty Face Fool - Fantastic song. I would never have guessed she didn't write it herself. It's very Jewel.

11. Nicotine Love - Love how haunting it is... and the subtle screaming and heavy breathing in the background. The whole thing is just very cool.

12. Carnivore - I really like this acoustic version. I can picture her sitting somewhere all alone just belting this out.

13. My Father’s Daughter - I had a feeling when we got a sneak preview of this that I wouldn't listen to it much, and I was right. Love the original song, but I can do without Dolly. Her voice sounds like a old lady on her deathbed. I'm a bit surprised this one is being chosen to be released, with a video and everything. I think it's a poor choice. Skip.

14. Mercy - Beautiful song. So full of emotion - so very Jewel.

I tend to be a bit critical of songs when I hear them for the first time, or of new versions of songs. I'm sure after I listen to this more, I'll start to like the songs I feel sort of meh about. Except MFD.

Heyya folks! I'll go ahead and give my perspective, as well . . .

Love Used To Be - I love this song. Like some others were saying, I think it kind of set the tone for the album as a whole and is definitely a strong song on its own. I never skip it. 5/5

A Boy Needs A Bike - Not my fav, but I have been listening to it regularly. I think the story gets lost in this version. There's something that doesn't quite make it work for me. 4/5

Everything Breaks - Great song, and a very acceptable version, I think! 5/5

Family Tree - I think this one is growing on me, still, but I haven't been loving it. 3/5

It Doesn't Hurt Right Now - Who is this guy again? Honestly I've only fully listened to this song twice, and it didn't really do much for me. I hear his voice first and just naturally skip it. . . oops! 0/5

His Pleasure Is My Pain - I think this is my favorite on the album. I think this song kind of exemplifies what I wanted out of this album. The extra strings are kind of weird, but really give the song a cool, yet lonely feeling. There's also some great yet not overdone background vocals that get me, too. 5/5

Here When Gone - I like this one, and I don't usually skip it or anything, but I don't love this version. Similar to Boy Needs A Bike, I think some of the very "Jewel" charm was slightly misplaced. I never really liked the "absence/pillar" set of lines, but it's not the worst either. Also the way she says lips at the end of the song just sounds so . . weirdly Jewel, yet out of place. . . I can't really explain what goes thru my mind when I hear it! 4/5

The Shape Of You - No drastic opinion, one way or another. Nothing I really love or dislike about this version, and the song is good as is. 4/5

"Plane" Jane - Didn't love it at the Soiree, but this version is pretty fun! Definitely caught me off guard how much, and how quickly this song grew on me. 5/5

Pretty Faced Fool - Been loving this song. Always happy when I hear it come on, and there's nothing I can complain about with it. 5/5

Nicotine Love - Awesome song, with a really good version that made it onto the album. Similar to His Pleasure, the strings really made this song darker than it would have been solo. 5/5

Carnivore -  Accurate:

All I want to add is that this song was probably my biggest disappointment on the album. Cause I fucking love this song, and I would literally rather ANY other song be chosen for solo-acoustic than this one. Hoping for a band version somewhere, sometime. To quote what she fucking said AT the Soiree "And I cut it with the band and I'm so excited for how it came out, actually." So excited you wanted to keep it to yourself, Jewel?! Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugh  /5

. . .

My Father's Daughter - Not a mega fan of Dolly in this, and I only kinda like this song to begin with. 2/5

. . . Not to mention, I already have like 100 solo acoustic versions of Carnivore! Like I'd rather have the energy of a live version than the clarity of this one, ya knoooow?

Mercy - Strong song, tho not my fav. Def a keeper, tho. 3/5

. . . Still I guess Carnivore is a 4/5. At least she didn't make it worse, right? Secret band version release will be 5/5

So total I guess I'm around 3.9/5 Which isn't super stellar I guess, but I really like a majority of the songs on here. Even on my massive car playlist of Jewel songs, not one of her albums is represented in its entirety. I'd say this album probably sits at number 3 or 4 on a ranking of her records.

Plain Jane is officially the mister's new favorite.

True story:
We're in the car yesterday, and the Mrs says; "Ya know what song is stuck in my head?"  And I'm all;"No, what?"  And she tells me, Plain Jane.  Then she goes on to tell me that she's been listening to Jewel a lot, and how she writes great hooks and actually starts engaging me in this conversation....about Jewel.  You have no idea how much she disliked her and now she's telling me it's because they only played WWSYS on the radio and she never heard "the good stuff" and she feels bad that she thought she was a shitty musician.  I almost fell out of the car.  I was so confused.

I have noticed that people who aren't typically Jewel fans seem to really like Plain Jane!

Me, I'm kinda meh about it, but it's alright.

I love this album. The opening is so strong, with Love Used to Be, which to me sounds perfect. Other favorites: Family Tree, His Pleasure..., Here When Gone (the country-est of the bunch but not too much so), Everything Breaks. Does PrettyFF count even if Jewel didn't write it??

There are a few songs I'm not crazy about as much as other people... I must be a bad fan, 'cause they include Boy Needs a Bike, The Shape of You and Violet Eyes.  :hide:

Other unpopular opinion: I think Mercy is a mess. It's too... prosaic, like listening to a chapter from her book but with music. On the other hand I really like It Doesn't Hurt Right Now. Poor Rodney Whatever

Plain Jane is a fun song. :)

I don't think not liking every single song makes you a bad fan.  I don't like every song, or album, or arrangement.  Look around for the "pink frisbee" (0304)  posts, or the people who don't like the country stuff.  It's all perspective and opinion.   :shrug2:

Sure. I wasn't serious.  :)
But those are "classic Jewel" songs that have been loved for years, know what I mean? And two are about poor Jacque and I should be deeply moved but I'm not. Heart of stone!  :shiftyeyes_anim:

(Hey, J¥st1n loves 0304! )

Hehe I feel ya. I used to love Violet Eyes but now I tend to skip over it, along with Shape of You! (no offence Jacque. Or Z).  ::2

And for the record, I love 0304!  In fact, my CD is so scratched up I can't listen to the last couple of songs. Thinking of ordering another copy on-line, since I can't seem to find it in stores.

Let the ridicule begin....   :hide:

But those are "classic Jewel" songs that have been loved for years, know what I mean? And two are about poor Jacque and I should be deeply moved but I'm not. Heart of stone!  :shiftyeyes_anim:

I would rather listen to 0304 than a lot of other crap.  It's not my favorite, but I don't hate it.  I hate the production quality.  2 Find U, is one of my faves.  I'll take acoustic Jewel any day, though.  Except Two Hearts Breaking, is better on the album (in my opinion).  But that's just because the electric guitar riff pulls the song together and gives it a flavor that isn't there live.  Live, it has a totally different impact on me.
