“I’ve been a big fan of Rodney’s and we finally got together to write. He came up with that first verse and we liked the idea of this being a mini-play. It’s very theatrical - with a storyline that conveys the aftermath of a woman's affair on a broken relationship devoid of communication. It’s also about the complexities of love and the willingness, courage and ability to engage yourself in it fully or not. I think it’s difficult to do a male-female duet. It’s hard to strike the right note that isn’t just sort of saccharine. But Rodney’s a very deep and thoughtful writer and very interested in truth, so I loved that this wasn’t a typical duet.”

At first, I sort of thought maybe Kase after reading in Never Broken how having a child changes you (or something). The first mention of he making it three is sort of innocent, but then later it's more of a "no way in hell is it their own kid". I dunno maybe I'm demented.

This is the only song I haven't listened to.  I can't get past Rodney Crowell's voice.  I may have to try again.   Hmmmm, weird.

I don't think the song is that serious. I see it sorta like Bad As It Gets or Till It Feels Like Cheating and such, songs that she didn't write but still liked. Of course she co-wrote this song so it's a tad different, but not that different, you know? I think it's just a song based on fiction.

Me too.. it makes sense. But, I don't really like this song that much so I haven't put a ton of thought into what it all means.

   I dunno.  I agree with Jess and Donna, but I don't know if I care enough to think about it anymore.  Sounds like an affair.  But ya know, 2 Heats Breaking was so obviously about them and that came out...what, 2 years ago...

As a writer, I can say, sometimes you just write stuff and the meaning is significant to you and you hope people apply it to them and not try and figure out how it applies to your life.  Sometimes, you write it because it wrks and you realize later on, it meant more than you intended.

They did this with Star Wars - they apply all this symbolism to Nazis and whatnot and I assure you, this movie was not meant to make a cultural statement when it was written.  Did that make sense?  I'm still all "whoosh"

As a writer, I can say, sometimes you just write stuff and the meaning is significant to you and you hope people apply it to them and not try and figure out how it applies to your life.  Sometimes, you write it because it wrks and you realize later on, it meant more than you intended.

This belief definitely applies to some artists, but not all of them.  That being said, it is definitely my favored opinion on the subject.   Sometimes, finding out the artist's "meaning" to a song can ruin it.  Case in point: Semisonic said their famous song, Closing Time, is actually about a baby being born and now the song sounds really silly to me.  It was never amazing or anything, but now it seems goofy.

I always liked this song - its catchy. I heard the writer of the song wrote it about his babies being born in sort of a 'disguised way' so his bandmates wouldn't get sick of playing a song all the time about his kids. Instead, most people think its just a song about a bar closing, which is probably more appealing to the masses.

Hmmm.  I was never really a fan of the song, but it does change it a lot.  Can't say I ever really listened to it closely enough to know any words other than the chorus.

Can we go back to poking fun at the cow poke, and making off colour jokes?  'Tis my nature and what I do best.

On the topic of Closing Time, I was obsessed with that song! I'd listen to it so much, man. It was kinda embarrassing. I still like now, but in retrospect, yeah, it is pretty cheesy. But oh well.
