oh.

You might hate that song. You might disklike a few things on this record, because it feels very influenced by musical theater to me - especially Love Used to Be, It Doesn't Hurt Right Now and His Pleasure is My Pain.

When I hear the climax of Love Used to Be, I think of Jewel as Dorothy on that Wizard of Oz CD.

I haven't either. And I won't. I haven't actually listened yet - just downloaded as soon as the play started, then skipped to the next song. Yup! When the news broke, Amy and I had a convo about it being sad, but her writing would improve. And we were all right.

Not to be a stickler, but technically, the songs didn't get better, her production and arrangement skills did. The majority of them are old songs. I think the divorce just gave her the freedom to say "eff it" and do things her way because she didn't have to answer to anyone anymore. Like not releasing her book of poems, or arguing over releasing Ten, and various other stories he has told. I agree that the songs took on new meaning for her and she has most definitely channeled that into the performances and recordings.

But don't take my word for it. I like musicals and vinyl.

I'm on Here When Gone right now, and man, this one in particular is a lot better than the previews made it seem. It's sooo good. And I gotta admit I almost teared up when His Pleasure is My Pain started. I don't know if it's because of the topic or the fact that it's such an old song that I never thought would ever be on an album or what, but man, the emotion throughout all the songs so far is amazing. I didn't really realize until now just how depressing it is. In a good way, if that makes sense.

This record is intense on headphones! OMG, I teared up a little at HPIMP ... I told mister it was because I was chopping onions...
