New songs in the ASCAP catalog
« on: April 24, 2016, 11:57:47 AM »
There were a bunch of new Jewel songs added to her ASCAP catalog this weekend! Some of them are pretty old (e.g. 2 Find U), so I'm not sure if they are just cleaning up their catalog. They originally had "To Find You" in the catalog, so I'm not sure why they added 2 Find U as well. I don't know if all these new songs with Wynn Varble are from a recent songwriting session or an older one and they're finally getting cataloged?

There's another "It All Comes Down to This" that lists Guy Chambers along with Jewel & Kara...maybe they're re-using portions of the song that he didn't write?

Who's Wynn Varble? I wonder what those songs sound like.

Good find, Robby!

She's performed with him a handful of times in the past (or maybe once?).

He's a co-writer for "Anyone But You"...the rest are unreleased tracks.

I don't care much for that song, so those others can stay in the archive. :P

Closer behind reminds me of Katy Perry's last friday night lol  and unbroken is so beautiful!!!

Why jewel doesn't release an album of demos and b-sides? Id pay good money for a nice chunk of songs. So many artist release these kinds of albums. I got a 4 disc set of one that Tori Amos released and it was awesome.

I would like that, too!  Ben Folds had a great one of these as well and it was amazing!

Smashing Pumpkins did a re-release of their old albums with second discs full of rare tracks - that would be awesome as well!

Agreed! Think about it..if she released an album like that she wouldn't even need to tour for it and shed be making money from it also. She probably has no plans on these kinds of songs cause she doesn't remember them lol

 I'm surprised she makes it through a show sometimes :P

A lot of these aren't written by Jewel, so there's probably too much red tape, whereas someone like Amos or Folds write all of their own songs exclusively. That's probably the hurdle.  These songs above aren't Jewel songs - she's just singing them. :(

Womp womp womp 😔
I guess theres a lot more songs that were sent to Jewel to record than we thought. Very few songs that someone else writes make it to a jewel album. I can only think of 3 off the top of my head. Pretty faced fool, bad as it gets and till if feels like cheating. Bummer! But im sure theres a ton of demos and b-sides of her own that will never see the light of day.

I found two more songs I've never heard of!

One's called Second Skin and the other's called Love Will Come To You!  I found the full tracks of these ones after I signed up for a log in at Warner Chappell

Love will come to you: http://www.warnerchappell.com/song-details/WW%20001144722%2000/25928a4c-0d00-0274-e053-969e2a0a0145

Second Skin: http://www.warnerchappell.com/song-details/WW%20001144724%2000/25928a4c-0d03-0274-e053-969e2a0a0145

If you click on "masters" it will bring an MP3 of the song up.  The site will only play a clip, but if you have Download Helper, it'll grab the whole song!!

Yeah, Second Skin is pretty rocky!  Definitely not what I expected!

Jewel doesn't have the rights to either of those songs, the website says :o

EDIT: at least that's what I think the "Control: N" means

There is another jewel-song that really comes to mind when I hear this: Fragile heart (just music style at some points, refrain)

A lot of these aren't written by Jewel, so there's probably too much red tape, whereas someone like Amos or Folds write all of their own songs exclusively. That's probably the hurdle.  These songs above aren't Jewel songs - she's just singing them. :(

Nah, they were written by Jewel, just not exclusively Jewel. :) Rick Nowels has co-written a few of her songs so he's not a new name. The other two songs, though? I don't know who those writers are. Using my google powers I see that Marv Green co-wrote Stronger Woman and Jeffrey Stevens is another country singer, so I wonder if Love Will Come To You was recorded for Perfectly Clear. Second Skin actually sounds like it might fit on Goodbye Alice in Wonderland so it didn't surprise me that the co-writers on that song had more of a rock background (Stan Lynch was the drummer for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers).

Oh! I just found this! From an old copy of Billboard magazine Sep 2, 2000.

https://books.google.com/books?id=fBEEAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA41&lpg=PA41&dq=Jewel&source=bl&ots=LPJjbk9LcN&sig=_bj6YqbzgB5oULEByUZDa16NJ6I&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwirmeyDwdjOAhVD8CYKHaBED0kQ6AEIRjAK#v=onepage&q=Jewel&f=false

So I'm guessing that's when Love Will Come To You and Second Skin were written. :)

Wow! It's like Christmas in August! I'm so excited to listen to all of these as I pack for a trip tonight!

The renovation on the wiki has taken a backseat lately. Sorry, y'all!

You can add it to the new wiki at http://www.jewelwiki.com/w/ or the old one. I won't lose it in the transition. If you want to give it a try, copy the formatting from another song and it should be good. :) The new one uses a lot of embedded templates for lyrics, etc. When you're editing a page, the bottom should allow you to click and see the templates in use so you can see how to edit them. Maybe the old one is easier for now...play around, you won't muck it up! :)

Good info, Tracy!  Nice to see at least WCM knows what year their songs came from - unlike Spirit Music!

Just when you start thinking not much is going on...

This is a cool little batch of finds! And I was mentally sort of going in the same direction Tracy did...I think all those songs [EDIT: Well, not all of them- there are some from the 2 country albums and some relatively new ones and also some I never heard of] on the Warner-Chappel site originated from that writers' camp in 2000, especially now that I see the names in the picture caption also show up as co-writers.

Serve the Ego and Shadows Play were written there, too, right?

They were. :) I was actually just listening to this Shadows Play demo and it suddenly clicked in my head that, hey, this was probably recorded from that Summer camp writing session! The album info on my phone has always said "WCM Summer Camp Sampler 2000" and it's perplexed me about what the heck that was. I guess now we know. :)

You guys are amazing for finding all this stuff! Sadly most of the songs are deleted by now i guess? I only can hear the Standing Still-demo (which is very nice) from the links.
Shadows Play is nice too, i can imagine it very good on this way with a different production like serve the ego or i walk away.

There's a few more new songs posted in the ASCAP Repertory:

Sparks Fly (written by Jewel & Steven McEwan)
Still Water (written by Jewel & Steven McEwan)
Too Much Love (written by Jewel & Steven McEwan)

And in the BMI Repertoire:
I Want to Fall (written by Miri Ben-Ari, Ronald Frost, & Jewel) - I think this is the version of Lemondrops and Clover that has violins played over it; not sure why Steve Poltz is missing in the credits though, since many of his songs are with BMI.

Arnold Frost and Anthony Bell worked on the Kev Brown remix.  I ordered it from the guy directly and he sent me an amazing version with the following note:

Quote
This is the only version. Most people have never heard the full song. Jewel came thru philly at ATOJ studios... we worked on some stuff that never made any albums. this is one of those songs. Enjoy the full version. (the mixtape version is short and lower quality)  I have to credit Anthony Bell and Ronald Frost for the help with production...Thanks Again for your support.

EDIT: He didn't say anything about Miri Ben-Ari, but they've worked together a few times.

Hi, Fabio!  :)

The board lets me upload the individual tracks as downloads on the comments, so I've been doing that, but I've never zipped them all up as one.

Looking forward to hearing that Poltz song!

Three more songs with Tommee Profitt?? :fun:  That dude's pretty cool.  I could use some Jewel with soundscapes.  He did the No More Tears production, too.

Looks like most of these made it to this album, so sequencing must've been done for quite some time. As always, it's the ones that don't make the cut that I get curious about (like Orange Crush).

Alibis (Sam Hollander, Jewel, Grant Phillip Michaels)
Almost (Jewel)
Dance Sing Laugh Love (Sam Hollander, Jewel, Grant Phillip Michaels)
Hate Hate (Jewel)
Is It Me (Anya Marina, Jewel, Tristan Prettyman)
Living With Your Memory (Sam Hollander, Jewel, Grant Phillip Michaels)

The Strip 1 (Jewel) - maybe a poem?
When You Loved Me (Jewel)
