It was after Nedra had to quit her job because of a temporary heart ailment that she suggested that Jewel cut down on living expenses and "make herself available to her dream" by moving into a van. Nedra moved into a van as well, for solidarity. Mom lasted six months, Jewel a year.

"I feel like a comic book," Jewel says about the whole story.

When she arrived in Southern California, Jewel worked in a series of crappy jobs and lived out of her car. The desperate feeling returned. "When you're so poor that you can't find food," she says, "and you're scraping food off of people's plates in restaurants to take home, it's degrading." She pauses for a moment, concentrating on the flickering candle. "And I would let bosses flirt with me, because they would take me out to dinner. I'd say, 'I'm not interested in you.'" She switches tenses again: "But you still played the game."

Money was a constant worry. "Once I let a kidney infection go too long," says Jewel, "and we went to all these doctors' offices, and they'd refuse me. Antibiotics are $60 to $100." Which, needless to say, Jewel and her mother did not have. "I'm in the car, throwing up all over myself, and my mom would get refused by one clinic after another. And seeing my mom walk out of the clinics, it was damaging to my spirit. It just made you angry. Nobody gave a shit." She gives a little shrug: "Nobody had to."

After Jewel was fired from another job, she decided then and there to sing for a living: "I thought, 'This is it. My life's a mess. I have to do what I love or die.'" Borrowing money from a boyfriend, she upgraded her living space (a van!), moved in and began to sing in a coffeehouse.

So, when did Jewel live without passion? "It all came to a head when I was 18, y'know, that point where you have to decide whether to stay at school, or get a job," says Jewel, admitting that, yes, the impoverished circumstances of her life at that point also added to her state of emotional inertia. "It sucked, for sure," she continues. "But at least I wasn't 40, hadn't a family, was on my own and could live in a car. And, as I said, I learned to believe that things must change for the better.

Kilcher graduated from the high school knowing she loved music, but unsure of what to do with herself. She relocated to San Diego to be with her mother, but the two of them struggled to make rent.

"It was one of those things where you get bad job after bad job and you don't know what you want to do with yourself and you have the rest of your life to face consciousness. . . . Finally I just decided to move into my van and try to do something that I liked," she says, her smile giving way to a giggle, "and it worked!" Her 1979 Volkswagen van became her home.

Her mother, Nedra Carroll, says by phone from California, "It was my suggestion that we move into our respective vans and cut all this overhead. We would chose sites, park together, open our doors and have tea."

After graduating from high school, Jewel moved to the warmer clime of San Diego, where her mother had relocated in 1991. Working as a waitress and answering phones, she had little time for her music and songwriting. It was her free-spirited mother who suggested that they move out of the apartment they shared and live in their VW vans in order to save rent money while Jewel tried to launch her music career. In 1993 Jewel, whose mom sometimes parked her van next to her daughter’s, signed a recording contract with Atlantic Records. “When I first got signed,” says Jewel, “I got $100,000. I put it in the bank and did not touch it. My mom was like, ‘Jewel, we need groceries.’ It was hard for me to get a grip on the fact that this wasn’t the only money I would ever make and that I wouldn’t have to go back to my van.”

After a brief spell in art school in Michigan, she headed for San Diego. Desperately unhappy, suffering chronic illness due to weak kidneys, working in dead-end waitressing jobs and wondering what she was going to do with her life, Jewel received some rather unusual advice from her mother: why not cut down on living expenses and 'make herself available to her dream' by moving into her car. Jewel duly lived in a VW camper van for a year, washing in public conveniences. Concentrating on songwriting and performing, she had landed herself a record deal by the time she was 18. And the rest was? well, a lot of hard work, actually.

Same breed, different colors. Shih Tzus are my fave! Our family had two and they were both the best damn dogs we ever had. Really random question here, but bear with me...

At the end of Just Like Penguins Do during TexFest 2011, any idea what Jewel says at the 4:19 mark at the end of the song? Really love this performance (moreso than the eventual studio recording) and listen to it fairly often. Always kinda irks me that I can't quite figure it out. Sounds like "Good..."?

Pretty sure nobody else is even remotely bothered, but thought I'd throw it out there. Anyone else listen to this show pretty regularly? Still really love it. Even the pre-show music that night was awesome, turned me onto Holly Williams and even a bit of Anya Marina.

Well thanks for trying though! Not sure why it bothers me, just always leaves me wondering everytime I play it through.

Always felt that the album version of Penguins was a little over-produced compared to the acoustic version, but it was always going to be really. The chorus feels quite 'Disney' to me, but I'm veering off on a tangent now...

I feel ya! I have a version of Memoirs of a Housewife (Totally Tupperware) where she mumbles something before she starts singing that I can't make out even though I've listened to it a thousand times and it bugs me too! lol.

Yup that's the version Randy!! It's where she says "Totally Tupperware... blah blah blah blah....." lol. She mumbles something there and I can't make it out! lol  It's probably something really dumb or insignificant but it's always bothered me.

Did I ever tell the story of the time I had front row center seats for one of her shows and my friend and I wound up being a little late and she stopped the whole show mid song and was like:

It says there are peers on dime, but my bittorrent isn't registering any of them.  I think they're mad at me because I was supposed to change some router/modem setting to drop some kind of security feature but I can't do that.  We both work from home and security is hella important.

I've seen her perform a number of times and while her writing and presentation are excellent, her vocals are amazing. Enjoy this set; I did.
