A little backstory from Halloran:
FOO FIGHTERS & JEWEL CREATE LED ZEPPELIN MAGIC IN PHOENIXI’ve known Jewel since the early days, back when she used to play gigs at the Inner Change Coffeehouse and Java Joe’s in San Diego.
Jewel has a new book out –
Never Broken – and she is currently on a book-signing tour. On Thursday, Jewel came “home” to San Diego with a scheduled book signing in La Jolla. She reached out to me that day and invited me to attend. I mentioned that the Foo Fighters were playing in town later than night, agreed to meet her in La Jolla, and then we agreed to go to and see the Foo Fighters later that night. We went. We only caught the last two songs!
After the Foo Fighters finished the show and got off stage, Dave Grohl grabbed Jewel and had a ten minute conversation with her. They decided that she would sing with them the next night of their tour, in Phoenix. The schedule Gods were on their side because – Jewel already had a commitment in Phoenix scheduled the same day.
Jewel sang lead on the Led Zeppelin favorite “Whole Lotta Love.”
Here is the result. No rehearsal. No practice. If you look very closely, you can see that the words are laid out on the stage in front of her:
