Jewel has submitted herself for a Grammy for The Portal

Making the music for The Portal was a peak experience for me. It is genre defying. It is a 10 min piece of music that goes from meditation, to cinematic sound scape, to spoken word and then in and out of several songs that cover several genres, more spoken word and then it ends in a dance song!

I had no idea what category to submit it for - there is no poetry spoken word category and oddly no meditation or mental health music category.

Like much of my career, I continue to be interested in exploring music beyond the silos that the music business is structured in… and I think many fans are the same. We like what we like. Johnny cash has more in common with The Sex Pistols than Kenny Rogers. Agree? Disagree?

What category would you put The Portal in?

It might be a long shot, and I did chuckle, but why not? I appreciate that she has enough confidence to talk right out loud about it, too. I agree she should have put it in a new-agey-type category, though. And a true blues album would be a dream! Love to see more soul, more rhythm and fullness, and fewer theatrics. More of a chance of that as she grows taller and wiser.

I think she is awesome for doing whatever the fuck she wants to do!

Yeah, I think she had a geniune shot at the new New Age category - especially with all the talking and AMSR or whatever that is technically called.  Could be nice to see Jewel actually at the Grammys again regardless!

She is a great singer, so how come she has no grammy win at all, especially in her prime time?

But, in my opinion, Jewel really should have won that Best New Artist Grammy. Or if she lost, she shouldn't have lost to Leann Rimes, who was just some glorified karaoke kid.

Whatever. One of them still has a career in music, and the other is more famous for her scandalous tabloid appearances, so last laugh and all that.
