Title: Cyndi Lauper to feature duet with Jewel on her new album, out 5/6/16
Post by: Jessica on February 02, 2016, 08:21:36 AM
Before she became the international pop star behind hits such as "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" and "Time After Time," Cyndi Lauper was the singer in a band called Blue Angel that brought a distinct rockabilly flavor to the Eighties New Wave. It wasn't exactly country, per se, but she had clearly absorbed some musical lessons from Jerry Lee Lewis and Wanda Jackson.

Lauper puts those influences front and center on her version of "Heartaches by the Number" (listen to the song below). The song appears on her forthcoming country LP Detour, which will be available May 6th. Over a two-stepping beat and some bright fiddle, Lauper sings the unlucky-in-love lines with a grittiness that has more in common with rockabilly queen Jackson than Ray Price, who had a Number Two hit with the song in 1959. She quickly found that singing  like Price wasn't going to work for her.

"I had to divorce myself from that and find a place where this music sat in my voice, where the sweet spots were, how I could bring it to life and how I could bring a story to it," says Lauper, who will perform in Nashville as part of the online streaming concert series Skyville Live this evening. "Because it's all stories, everything is a story and you have to be able to tell a good story."

She applied that approach across the board while recording Detour, which paired her with producer Tony Brown (George Strait, Reba McEntire) and legendary Sire Records founder Seymour Stein. The collection includes Lauper's interpretations of early country classics like "I Fall to Pieces," "The End of the World" and the title track — a 1952 hit for Patti Page — featuring Emmylou Harris. The album was mostly recorded live in Nashville, leaving room for the songs to breathe and intentionally steering away from too much polish.

"My main concern was not making things clinical," explains Lauper. "I didn't want clinical music. I didn't want it clean. I wanted it a little dirty. I wanted the beat to be dirty and sexy. It was supposed to be a mix of R&B and country."

Willie Nelson stops by to perform on his own "Night Life," while Lauper is accompanied on other tracks by guests including Vince Gill, Jewel and Alison Krauss. And while the title of Detour hints at a departure for Lauper, the music is in some ways a continuation of her 2010 album Memphis Blues and the sounds she heard growing up in the late Fifties and early Sixties.

"My aunt had country and western on her little black and silver transistor radio that was above the refrigerator in her kitchen, her yellow refrigerator," recalls Lauper. "I thought it was quite interesting to think you were going forward, but really you're circling back again."

Lauper will get to try out a few of the songs as well as some of her beloved hits on Skyville Live, where she will perform with rising country singer Kelsea Ballerini and indie-pop star Ingrid Michaelson. Watch it online at skyvillelive.com starting at 8:00 p.m. ET.

Here's the Detour track listing:
1. "Funnel of Love"
2. "Detour" (featuring Emmylou Harris)
3. "Misty Blue"
4. "Walkin' After Midnight"
5. "Heartaches by the Number"
6. "The End of the World"
7. "Night Life" (featuring Willie Nelson)
8. "Begging to You"
9. "You’re the Reason Our Kids Are Ugly" (featuring Vince Gill)
10. "I Fall to Pieces"
11. "I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart" (featuring Jewel)
12. "Hard Candy Christmas" (featuring Alison Krauss)

I have a friend who is obsessed with Cyndi like we are with Jewel. I texted her last nite about our girls collaborating! So excited for this...even if I'm not a country fan. Anxious to hear their voices together.

I think it'll sound pretty great, too.

Song title is a little sad considering.... :(

Cyndi Lauper performed at Skyville Live in Nashville last week while she was there doing a recording session.
I wanted to attend but it was on 28 Jan. and Jewels show was on 30 Jan. and I couldn't work in both.  :crying:

Skyville Live in a great venue in Nashville and shows can be viewed online. www.skyvillelive.com

If you checkout the site look at last years Kris Kristofferson Show to see him sing "Me and Bobby McGee" with our Jewel. She was in the audience for the show.  :jewelsmilie:

So my friend - the CL fan - and I were texting last nite about this. She's a bit scared of a country album. Understandable. We started daydreaming about a co-headlining acoustic tour. Of course, this will never happen. But stalkers can dream. Also, Cyndi wrote a memoir this year, too. I just ordered it and told Jenn we'll discuss...now she must read Never Broken.

Will be quite interested to hear this, actually - shame it's so long to wait though!

I used to have a Cyndi Lauper Greatest Hits CD at one point (must have been 20 years ago, and I've no idea why), and it was actually pretty good once you get beyond Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. So this could be okay, although I haven't really heard anything of hers since the turn of the century.

So yeah, not the best analysis really.  :D

There was a video somewhere, of Cyndi doing a cover of Patsy Cline's - Walkin After Midnight.  I loved it.  I like the original, and I'm a huge Cyndi fan too, so ... where it comes from and all that

I am half way through Cyndi's memoir and now I want to hear everything she's ever done. Such an interesting, sad, powerful, funny, crazy life she has led. Interesting that she was told early in her career that her voice was more country and she should go that route and give up rock (she did start in rock bands before pop stardom).

I don't know if it's becuse she's from my old hood, or because I've always been a big Cyndi fan, I always thought she was incredibly underrated as a singer and musician.  I can't pick one song for a fave, but check out -  Hat Full of Stars.

However, perhaps Lauper’s most interesting request was to Jewel, who was invited to yodel on “I Want to Be a Cowboy’s Sweetheart.”

“I remembered that Jewel said she could yodel. So I texted Jewel, and I said, ‘Hi. Is this Jewel? This is Cyndi Lauper. Big fan. If this isn’t Jewel, well, then just chalk it up as another crazy text,'” Lauper remembers. “She texted back and said, ‘Yes, this is Jewel.’ I said, ‘Do you still yodel?’ and she said, ‘Well, yes, and that’s an unusual question, but okay …’” So she came down and yodeled.

“It’s got to be one of my favorite parts of the whole album,” Lauper admits.

I asked her about working with Cyndi at the meet and greet. I recorded it for my friend. Jewel said that "back in the day" people were either Madonna or Cyndi fans and she was a Cyndi fan. (I don't get that - I was always both - but anyway). Then she talked about how she yodeled for her. She hasn't read Cyndi's memoir - told her she should.

Cyndi vs Madonna -
That was actually true, if you were a NYer.  Or, more specifically, from Brooklyn, Queens or the Bronx. Go,Team Cyndi!

Cyndi talks about that in her book. I was in 7th grade when "She's So Unusual" exploded. I was already a Madonna fan and loved Cyndi, too. I never saw them as competitors. They were always so different - music style, personal style, dance style. Everything aside from being women who sang and had funky individual styles. As years went on though, I followed Madonna much closer than I did Cyndi. I'm just now revisiting her and exploring her music.

Like A Prayer is an amazing album, though.

I remember when it came out.  I was in school (Catholic), and we had to hear all about how sacreligious she was and blah, blah, blah - and burning crosses.  I like the song.  That's about it.  I have isssues with Madonna and how she got her start  :jackoff:

Cyndi, just worked her ass off.  And she's from the hood!

Regardless, they're both accomplished, talented, female artists.  So, I give them both credit for the longevity of their careers.  Especially given how much the industry changed and male dominated it is.

I'm going to have to read her memoir.

You do! I got the hardcover for $3 on Amazon. I'm only half way through. Gonna take it with me to AC next month in the slight chance of getting it signed. Very slight, but a girl can dream.

I know! Great find.

I have a friend who I'm meeting at the show who is a huge Boy George fan (I met her at a Duran Duran concert a few years ago). She insinuated that she has connections and may be able to get a meet and greet. I'm not pushing it, but would be thrilled with meeting either of them! Fingers crossed!

Cyndi didn't really sound like the Cyndi I recognize.  That's not a bad thing in any way - I only really know the pop tracks.  I kinda wonder if the rest of the record is like that.

I loved Madonna back in the 80's/early 90's. Lately though she's looking like a hag. She needs to start acting her 57 years, and not wear outfits that reveal massive cleavage and buttcheeks.

As much as I want to agree with you, if I had a body like hers (at any age), I'd be naked 24/7.
