Thanks, amigo.

The Hate Hate song is starting to piss me off bc it feels like a part of it is being uneccessarily exaggerated. Idk if I'm explaining myself right.

Dudes in power take advantage of people. That's our nature. She knows this. She's written about it. She dated Sean Penn and has been nervous to discuss it. He's a prolific woman beater. Telling a young boy to avoid toxic masculinity should be a good thing... Heck, a blessing if you nail it. Not a burden. This era is weird.

It's the "I was at a bar the other day....and wrote this song" lie that makes my eyes roll lol

I just think that anti-woke marketing strategies are annoying and antithetical to Jewel's image.  It's not like feminists started talking about creepers just to hurt her kid's feelings and telling liberals to be more tolerant of rednecks is peak irony. These two issues didn't arise in a vacuum and I wish I could have lived half of the charmed live Jewel must have so that I didn't have to point this out.

Why do you think it’s a lie?

Because it was on the POY 25 concert back during the pandemic a couple years ago.

She does that a lot. It's part of the career.

Wait until you start tracking the changes in major life stories.  Like choosing to be homeless to save money and live freely with her mom in matching vans (So cute uWu!!) versus the new story about sexual harassment and a denied check leading to homelessness and depression and kidney failure (SO MUCH STRUGGLE omg!!)

Did she start to change the story after her and her mom fell out?

The story took a sharp turn to darkness once the mindfulness and mental health initiatives became a part of Jewel, Inc. so to speak. She wasn't public about the falling out with her mom until Never Broken came out, and that's when the new story was pushed everywhere about the boss and the struggle.

It really didn't get mentioned a whole lot prior to that. Jewel went quiet for a couple years between 0304 and Goodbye Alice (though the title track on that album is about her mom.) The chats in concerts were unrelated, too.

I see. So before that, was it just assumed something happened between them but the specifics weren't known?

Also sorry, I feel like I kinda derailed the thread lol

Yeah, pretty much. There were rumors, but nothing certain. Howard Stern even tried to get her to talk about it, but she ducked. But basically Lenedra was everywhere and then one day, she was just, poof, gone. And it wasn't the weird cult stuff, because Jewel stayed cool with the cult leader and even still happily and emotionally performs Violet Eyes and Hole in My Heart without issue. So everyone knew it had to be money, but no one knew how until the book or how much. In my opinion, we still don't really know how much. Some numbers were tossed around on that Joe Rogan show, but they seem exaggerated. I don't know.

No worries about the thread. ;)

I am someone who also came from an extremely redneck, pioneer family-- right down to the outhouse and no running water bit-- along with tons and tons of traumatic experiences, and am now well educated and affluent-- and given that on stage a lot of stories and details are part of a performance intended to entertain, I think we should cut our girl some slack. My perception of what was happening in my life at 20 years old is much, much different now that I'm in my 30s and have more wisdom, context, and perspective. That said, I know that I have also created a narrative in my head to make sense of what happened to me, and it may be much different from how others around me experienced the things that went on at that time in my life. This is what people do to cope.

As for the 'Hate Hate' song, I didn't think she was making any excuses for toxic masculinity at all- she was just saying that we don't need to label ALL men as toxic, and that we need to stop 'othering' large entire groups of people, as that isn't what is going to fix the problems in the world right now. I know lots of soft hearted, caring rednecks who would love me for being gay and give me their shirt off their back, and I know 'liberal' people (I am very left wing myself) who are incredibly inauthentic. Jewel tends to walk the line between all groups, much like Dolly Parton does, as she knows alienating specific groups of people isn't helpful (and also a bad business move). She called out the worst of the worst in an IG live after the January 6th events, so I don't think she is excusing the vile stuff happening in the world. She called out toxic masculinity quite a bit in her Joe Rogan interview-- not that I'm a Joe Rogan fan.

"I have this theory, that if we're told we're bad, then that's the only idea we'll ever have." Seems like a pretty consistent message to me. We all tend to look for things that confirm the stories we tell ourselves about others around us, and I don't mean to disrespect anyone here or their opinion on these topics. Of course I'm a biased fan. I honestly feel a little sheepish that I've written this much about someone who I've never actually met, I just enjoy the music, and I personally have found her book and story to be immensely helpful in getting over my own struggles, so it stings me when it is labelled as just a money grab.

Yeah for sure - Great post.

RE: the Rogan interview, though, she was about to slip and say something along the lines of blaming women for getting into their Weinstein situations in the first place and then exaggerating about them later until Rogan saved her. About 75% through-ish.

That's really disappointing; I still haven't listened to the interview.

For anyone curious about what was said, on leveraging yourself to get ahead professionally, in particular they were referencing the movie industry and Harvey Weinstein taking advantage of young actresses and the casting couch:

“This will probably be pretty unpopular but I kind of felt that way about the Me Too movement. Guys shouldn’t be dicks in the workplace, they especially shouldn’t be raping you and those types of things, obviously, but being propositioned doesn’t mean you have to do it. …You can walk away. You can say fine, I’m going to lose my job, and it’s not fun, we shouldn’t be in that position, I shouldn’t have been in that position that that boss put me in to live in my car. But you also don’t have to do it, and something better will work out if you invest in yourself that way. …It’s so hard for people to believe but I’ve never seen it not work out. Every time I made the hard choice, it was like, rainbow, magical stuff happened, that I never would have thought would have, because I didn’t compromise my humanity. You can’t compromise your humanity and expect good things are come out of it, but I think if you invest in your humanity, magic happens, I see it all the time.”

later, on saying no in these situations, again in reference specifically to the Hollywood casting couch... "you pay a big price, and it really sucks, and we shouldn't have to. You definitely shouldn't have to."

Obviously, this statement comes from a position of immense privilege, since she was very lucky that it did work out. But nothing was said about women exaggerating their claims.

I was just sharing it; it's not my place to weigh in on these comments, I'm a cis dude (with out-of-control ADHD for transcribing that lol)  :)

As I've said, I have my own biases. I believe we should be totally free to point out when any public figure says something problematic, and that no one should be immune from criticism. That said, when we have literally thousands and thousands of hours of someone speaking on various topics, it becomes very easy to find enough inconsistencies, exaggerations, or problematic statements to create a false narrative around just about any individual's character. I think overall she has had a very a positive impact on the world, and she has built a large business around the intention to make a positive impact on the world, and there are more worthwhile uses of our time and energy. She has helped to create a non-profit that takes children off the streets, which touches me deeply for very personal reasons. So I just don't buy this "dark Jewel Inc." stuff or think she has gone down some dark path, and I wouldn't want someone to miss out on the positive aspects of her music because they might be deterred it by narratives like that without a rebuttal. I think I will bow out from this talk here because I don't enjoy discussing emotionally risky topics here, I just like coming here for tidbits of news and new live music. I also have a huge appreciation for everything you contribute here Jessica-- news updates, live show clips, tabs-- I just am incredibly thankful that I found this music because there is a high probability that it saved me from some very very bad situations and a much worse life overall, and it still does. So I can get embarrassingly defensive of a person I've never even met

My dude, I'm just is cis girl who had personal experience with the version of the OG version of the computer store guy a few times before I hit 20 and I'm sad to see it get boiled off and reconstituted as something marketable and obviously wrong rather than the ambiguous facepalm we all faced at one time or another. I like the original story more. I just wish I had a knife in my boot and/or a mom with one at my side.

Honestly Gwenyth or whatever, you can get an Oscar next time. Same with you, Ms. Ryder. Just keep your principles dear and be true to you.

I do now and will always love Jewel unconditionally, but my sister got a bit sloppy here. But don't worry. This community is practically miniature. Approximately 12 of us who remember computer store guy didn't make Jewel homeless. It's really not a big enough deal to matter.

I can't lie to the people, though. Jewel inc isn't evil, it just exists. It's not dark, it's just business. I would like that business to succeed. I think we all would. No worries - the good people of E-corp aren't reading this little pathetic forum. It will carry on no matter what is posted here.
