Just came across this great new interview on YouTube. She announces the new album title, “Freewheeling Woman” !!
https://youtu.be/MDSp2ZwFSiY
-
Great find!!
-
This is a good interview; I like his questions...they're different from what many interviewers ask.
-
I almost bought some moose poop jewelry in Alaska!
Thanks for posting!
-
...and Grateful will be on it. This was announced (new to me) on the free NPR show from KOTO in Telluride.
MORE IMPORTANTLY, right after that will be a second new album that will have Single Mom, 501 Beauty Queen, and Money. Might be more, but that's all I know so far. I'll edit this post as the show progresses.
-
Nice, can't wait!
-
Excited about that second album, not gonna lie. :mchammer:
-
Is there any estimated time known about this?
-
New studio album will be released this fall, according to American Idol video; fingers crossed
Is there any estimated time known about this?

Should we take bets on whether she will be wearing a hat on the album cover? :rofl2:

-
Maybe she'll be vaccinated by then and can go back to get her fillers she was mentioning months ago. Then she won't feel the need to hide her forehead any longer.
-
The hat/handkerchief situation is because of... FOREHEAD WRINKLES? I'm tres disappoint.
-
Yeah, I can't remember where she said it, but I definitely remember her saying it.
-

Seriously??? That makes me sad. Although I'm not really surprised.. I'm sure she's had something done to other parts of her face as well. :lolsad:
-
It's just botox. Seems everyone's doing it anymore. You and I might be the last women standing!
-
is there a list of songs recorded for the album?

She said she recorded over 200 songs to get what she wanted for the album!!!!

She could have a Tyra Banks eighthead FULL of wrinkles & it would still look better than that godawful hat/scarf combo!
-
Don't get angry:
I think the scarf/head thing is a good thing!
It united EDA's all over the world, they all feel the same way on this matter, so how can it be bad? just saying.

Mooseses (Moosei? *shrug*) and I will never get along. That's just facts. Because:
1. They'll kick you - not a fair way of fighting. If you ever get in a bar fight with a guy and his opening move is to kick you square in the chest... Well, you're in for some dirty scrapping. It's probably going to involve biting. That's never a good thing. Might even get your ear Mike Tyson'd.
2. If I was a big giant moose, I'd be embarrassed to be pooping out pellets. I mean come on, you're a giant furry animal?!? I'd be laying some serious logs! (even if I was just eating berries.) It would be like that Bono episode of South Park. There'd be pictures on my Insta and I'd be calling up the Guinness Book of World Records. (Now that I think about it - Maybe, I should stop shaving my chest?)
-
I think the scarf/head thing is a good thing!
You think wrong.
-
The new album release is pushed back to Spring 2022. Thanks, Covid.
-

Is this surprising tho? I was under the impression it might never be released! :hide:
At least this is something.. right?
-
Feels like a couple years it's been coming. No More Tears was spring 2020 and that was the first "taste" of the new record coming out "any minute." It's quite a delay! There must be some serious promo requirements or something to compensate the record company investment. Something like that. I slept through that class.
-
I see what you did there! putting it out of context.

Jewel’s anticipated upcoming album Freewheelin’ Woman, which reflects her personal and musical evolution of “being on this side of life,” as she lovingly calls her current chapter, will be released in Spring 2022
Allison Kugel: Tell me about the new music.
Jewel: I have a new album called Freewheeling Woman coming out. This was the first record I’ve written from scratch. Even with my first album I had 100’s of songs already written by the age of eighteen, so I would always just take songs out of my back catalogue, whether it was pop, country, or whatever. I didn’t want to do that for this one even though I have a lot of songs in my back catalog that I love. I wanted this new album to be written from the ground up and reflect who I am now. I think I was forty-five when I was writing it and it was hard! I see now why middle-aged artists do a lot of drugs (laugh).
Allison Kugel: Oh man (laughs).
Jewel: They do it to bypass the work that it takes to get past the domestic architecture that had gotten into me, and to find a new, honest, raw, but different new place creatively. I think I wrote two hundred songs for this album to get the 12 or 14 that I like. It has a more soul feel. Kind of like a Muscles Shoals soul feel. I’m singing very differently than I’ve sung. Singing a lot better than I’ve ever sung and its sort of a celebration. I’m 47 now but it feels fun to be just like on my side of life. I enjoy it (Laugh)
-
I don't like how she completely forgets her processess haha. 0304 was also written from scratch...
-
I was thinking the same, Fabio!
I was gonna say she sorta recycled Fragile Heart for that album, but looking at the original, it's a completely new song with like one shared line.

First thing I thought of was Fragile Heart! But yeah... it's different.... :that:

Jewel: A (Happy) Freewheelin’ Woman
Even though singer/songwriter Jewel has been noted as a particularly gifted writer for more than 25 years, she still found ways to explore new artistic territory with her thirteenth studio album, Freewheelin’ Woman, due out this fall. [uhhh, no????]
“It’s the first time I ever challenged myself to write a record from scratch,” Jewel says. “I always have thousands of songs in my back catalog, and so I was always able to just instantly have at least ten songs that I was going to use for a record in any genre.” This time, however, she decided to do things differently. “I wanted it to be exactly who and where I was now,” Jewel explains.
Lyrically, Jewel explores themes of independence, womanhood, hope, and heartbreak in these new songs. Musically, Freewheelin’ Woman is perhaps her most stylistically diverse album, encompassing folk, pop, and R&B. “The record is definitely showing influences I haven’t been able to pay homage to before,” she says. “A lot of the Muscle Shoals sound and Dusty Springfield and Sarah Vaughan—stuff that I was very obsessed with when I was between thirteen and fifteen [years old].”

EDIT: Release is Spring 2022 - not Fall 2021. The article is using some old info.

Nice find, Jess! And I like most of the songs we've heard her preview during Live from San Quarantine or on Instagram (especially Almost). Looking forward to how they sound here!
-
The Apple Tracklist has No More Tears as a duet with Hootie from the Blowfish. I wonder if that's legit?

EDIT: You can preview all of the songs now on that link!

It is DEFINITELY a different version from previous release, but I never did hear Darius Rucker in the preview.

There's a translucent orange vinyl up for pre-order on Jewel's site. It's very reasonably priced, but won't ship until late 2020: https://shop.jeweljk.com/products/freewheelin-woman-vinyl

Hi everyone! It’s great to see some familiar names again… it’s been at least 15 years since I was active on a Jewel forum! Anyhoo, has anybody else noticed they took the track samples off of iTunes, and Amazon? I wanted to play the one of Alibis for my wife, because I swear I’ve heard that before and was wondering if it was a cover. I’m excited for this new album, and it will be here before we know it.
-
Frick, I knew I should have recorded that!
I did not recognize Alibi as a cover.
Welcome, kjm!

So confused. Thought this was coming out the 15th but my pre-order says the 22nd. Amazon and Target have it listed for the 22nd. iTunes has it listed for the 15th.
-
It looks like digital release a week earlier?

Man that is some BS right there. Guess I'm waiting a week, I'm not gonna buy it twice.
I was fine dealing with movies coming out on digital before physical, but now on albums too? Ridiculous

Umm.... hey, fraggle, what's up bro?

Apparently, there's a bonus track edition
https://riffmagazine.com/album-reviews/jewel-freewheelin-woman/
https://entertainment-focus.com/2022/04/15/jewel-freewheelin-woman-review/
13. Alaska (Bonus Track) - Maggie Rogers' cover
14. Grateful (Acoustic Bonus Track)
-
I love the album! Don't know why but I get the 'Joy' vibe from it.
'Long Way 'Round', 'Alibis' and 'When You Loved Me' are standouts for me
'Nothing but Love' reminds me of 'Through My Words of Healing'
The only thing I'm confused about is the new version of 'No More Tears'. I like the solo version better.
-
Alibi is even better than I thought it was
-
Anyone have the rumored bonus track?
-
first impressions after one complete listen:
it doesn't suck.
Notable Tracks:
Almost
When You Loved Me
Tracks I Would probably adore acoustically:
Alibis
Dance Sing Laugh Love
-
Amazon lets me download the album before the CD arrives, so that's cool! Love this record! I'm on my third listen right now... Half Life is excellent. Alibis chorus is very clever. Almost is another awesome one.
Honestly think I like every song on it. Her vocals are really, really good too. I'm in to it!
-
Did you see this, Desolate? It has Alibis and DSLL. It was a bit of a struggle, but it sold me on both

I had not seen this either. She's so joyful in it. It's a pleasure to experience! Thanks, Jess

I am loving this new material, for me this whole album is right up there with This Way, and Goodbye Alice in Wonderland.
-
This is going to be one of my favorite Jewel albums - stylistically it's up my alley with my general music tastes already. When I hear some of her previous albums, I think, "Wow, Jewel has certainly changed a lot over the years." However, with this one, while it's very different, at the same time it sounds like a very natural progression from the artist that released PoY 25+ years ago. I feel like this belongs with PoY and PutP-- the three records just seem to 'fit' together for me.
This album has the best sounding arrangements and vocals out of all of her previous albums. It's just very... musical and easy on the ears. My favorite tracks are the first and last ones, and Half Life. Nothing but Love is like old school rock combined with a 90s hit. Long Way Around has already gotten a lot of plays from me, it's classic Jewel but at her finest musically. I wouldn't normally be into a track called "Dance Sing Laugh Love" but its just so catchy I can't not like it. No More Tears sounds great but I also prefer the solo version. When You Loved Me sounds much better than I thought after hearing it on a live stream-- it sounds very PoY, and also evokes Leonard Cohen and Neil Young. The tuning of the guitar on Almost also evokes PoY for me, but from a much more grown up artist.
The overarching theme of this album seems to be moving on from divorce and feeling joy again, whereas PutP was very much in the mourning phase-- so the acoustic tracks fit in well against the bigger productions. She has been so good over the past few years, and I think she knows it. I know she has always said she was being authentic with all of her albums, but I really feel that more than ever over the last few years after all the super slick pop and country albums which I enjoyed but didn't connect with as much. She has tuned into what makes her stand above similar artists and she's capitalizing on it. I'm looking forward to see what's next.
-
It's funny you say this. She went live on IG on Friday and said that just as she sees Picking Up the Pieces as a bookend to Pieces of You, she also sees this album in many ways a similar bookend for Spirit. She said Nothing But Love she pairs with "Nothing Without Love" (Deep Water). Your impression is spot on with her intentions, it sounds like!

I like how in No More Tears, Darius Rucker sings "time" extra long.... little throwback to the Hootie song?
-
A lot of nice songs on this album. Alibis is my favourite at the moment, Half Life also one of my favourites it give a boy-needs-a-bike-vibe (don't know why). It's pretty easy listening most of the time. All and all I'm pretty happy with this new album, now it's waiting a bit in Europe to get it on vinyl and cd.
-
Got the CD in the mail today. No bonus tracks on the physical one either... anyone know where these are?
-
Whoa!!! Listening to the album on CD now and while it still says featuring Train on Dancing Slow, there is one thing missing... Pat Monahan! It's a different version of the song!
-

Got my CD too. no bonus :(

I just listened to the CD, and my copy also does not have Pat singing anywhere on Dancing Slow.
-
Any word on the song Alaska as a bonus track?
-
I also ordered a signed CD from that talk shop live… I’ll check that one out for Train and bonus tracks, it just shipped today, so it’ll be a while.

The album still says featuring Train on lead vocals so I'm thinking it's a mistake

Just saw Trevor's post at the top of this page saying no bonus track; completely missed it and kept asking :rofl2:
I guess I'm excited about it. That's awesome about a solo version of Dancing Slow though!
Any word on the song Alaska as a bonus track?

I’m pretty sure the Dancing Slow thing was a mistake. The verse where Pat’s voice should be is just kind of sung without any feeling, like it was a demo that was not meant to be released. Maybe that’s why some retailers pushed back the release date.

I'm definitely thinking it was a mistake. Will be a cool thing to have if they fix it in a second printing
-
I just bought a copy at my old favorite record store in my hometown yesterday. I don't have a CD player readily available (lol) but are you guys saying some of these are misprinted with a different version of Dancing Slow? If so, holy smokes - this might be amazing! I just wanted to offer up a little retail support but I might have accidentally gotten something great?

I'd be surprised if there are any with the correct version. I imagine it wouldn't be fixed until they do a second pressing. But yep, we have a different version of Dancing Slow.
I actually like the way Jewel sings Pat's verse.

Same here, Jessica. I had to play it in my Blu-ray player, which I probably wouldn’t have ever played if Trevor didn’t bring it up. Way to go EDAs! :)
-
I'm starting to think that the promotional version that was written up in Riff Magazine may be a second pressing? One that has the bonus track and Train's version instead of the solo one? I checked the article at Riff and it doesn't actually mention anything about Dancing Slow except to embed the music video for it.
-
Ah it's so lovely NOT hearing that dude from Train

My thought was perhaps it was a special version for some other store. For instance, I remember there being special versions of some of her smaller albums for Target and whatnot, but I'm not seeing anything straight away just yet. Maybe the vinyl version might have something, too. I feel like I'll have to play a guessing game with this one.
-
helloooo
soo, can anyone hit me up with that dancing slow no train version? cds are not pressed in brazil anymore so I'd have to by a crazy expensive imported one...

Sent! :music:

Didn't see Target listing any bonus tracks or promoting a Target exclusive of the album. It's also not being sold in stores either, seems It's an online only item.
The weirdest thing about all this is that in the liner notes and the back of the CD it says Train so there was definitely a screw up here
-
I just got the signed CD today, and same thing… no Train, no bonus tracks.
-
Samesies. Mister took the CD I got at the store to work to rip it. Also no Train (yay) and no bonus tracks (boo)
-
I should probably pick up this album. Haven't even heard it all yet.
I'm a bad person.

MONSTER!!! Hahaha, JK! There’s nothing wrong with Prolonging the Magic - which happens to be a fun Cake album. ;)
-
I have some thoughts, and some faves!
While I know she was trying to put a new ‘spin’ on this album, I find some of the songs reminiscent of old school Jewel, which I love, like ‘When you Loved Me’ and ‘Half-life’. ‘Almost’ reminds me of ‘Passing Time’ every time I hear it, and I love that song! Also really digging Alibis (very catchy) and Long Way Round (love the chorus especially).
All in all a really solid album :hi5:
-
Unpopular opinion: "Half Life" is the epitome of Jewel album filler
-
https://youtu.be/Ap27NpRO27c
-
Finally we get to hear it! I'll be honest, I was worried how this would sound after listening to Maggie Rogers version. I wasn't sure how Jewel would sound on the chorus, but I love this cover!
-
I like it too… I like that we actually have a REAL video too!
-
I like the video... she really looks in her element.
-
Ok - who's going to Red Rocks? I am in the planning process and wanna see some EDAS!
-
I'm waiting to get the cd (and the LP) when it releases in Europe. I'm afraid we will have the "right" version from the start.
I want a misprint too :'(
-
Grateful is a lot better in record than it was as a single.
I skip Half Life :hide:
-
I didn't skip Half Life this time and regretted it. But man, Almost is even better after the admittence that it was accidentally based on Silent All These Years.
