1. Pieces of you (this album really inspired me to listen to real music, it changed my interest for the rest of my life)
2. This way (the only tour I went to a concert, the good old days when Jewel went to Europe)
3. Spirit (great album, almost as good as This way)
4. 0304 ( I really like this one too, I can't help it)
5. Sweet and Mild/Wild
6. Goodbye Alice in wonderland
7. Perfectly clear
8. Lullaby (listened to it twice, should listen to it more to really rate it)
9. Merry goes round (listened to it twice, should listen to it more to really rate it)
10a. Let it snow: A holiday collection (I hate christmas and christmas songs...just like musicals)
10b. Joy: A holiday collection (did I mention I hate Christmas already?)

No rating yet, but I think it will make the top 3: Picking up the pieces

Not an easy task by any means! I generally find myself listening to individual songs that I'm in the mood for (across all albums), rather than each album in its entirety. I'd probably go with something like this...

1. Pieces of You (despite what I said in my blurb above, this is the one album that does get played from start to finish).

2. This Way (I got into Jewel in 2002 just as this was being released, and the only full concert I've seen Jewel at was on this tour, so the album brings back good memories).

3. Goodbye Alice in Wonderland (practically wore out my copy of this back in 2006 - was really disappointed with 0304, so very pleased when this was released as it felt like the true follow-up to This Way).

4. Perfectly Clear (I listen to a lot of music that has country influences, so this didn't stand out to me as being out of place like it did for others. 'I Do' remains one of my favourite Jewel songs, and I think it's my most played too).

5. Joy (was rather obsessed with this back in the day, and still listen to it at least once a year - I'll let you guess which month).

6. Lullaby (wasn't quite sure what to expect from an album being released on Fisher-Price records that included 'Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star', but this far exceeded my expectations. More of an easy listening album for the most part, and the (admittedly short) bridge in Circle Song is one of my favourite parts of any Jewel song ever).

7. Sweet and Wild (still haven't really given this the attention it deserves, but when I do turn it on, I pretty much enjoy it all - without ever getting too excited).

8. Spirit (probably far lower than most fans would rank it, but I just never connected with this album. As mentioned above, I started following Jewel in 2002, so I had the choice of listening to POY for its acoustic edginess or This Way for its polished production values and a full band sound. Spirit seemed to fall in between the two - not just chronologically! - and as I seemed to opt for one or the other of those sounds, I never gave Spirit a huge amount of airplay. The lyrics are great on this album, but musically, it just doesn't resonate. Can't recall the last time I heard any track from this CD).

9. Let It Snow (this is very listenable, but it felt more like another children's album in disguise).

10. 0304 (couldn't get into this, not even ironically).

11. The Merry Goes 'Round (do like 'Penguins', but the rest isn't really aimed at my aging demographic!)

Can't rate PUTP as yet, as I haven't heard the entire album. But based on the two tracks I've downloaded, I'd say it's up to ninth already.

1. POY
2. Spirit
3. This Way
4. GAIW
5. Lullaby
6. PUtP (I can't properly rate this yet but I already know from what I've heard that its better that what's to follow. I see it climbing to 3 or 4 at least)
7. Joy
8. 0304
9. Let It Snow
10. Sweet & Wild/Mild
11. The Merry Goes Round
12. Perfectly Clear

1. 0304 (This was at the height of my Jewel obsession so I have to like this one)
2. This Way (One of the few I can listen to every song without getting bored or skipping tracks)
3. Spirit (This is the album that really got me into Jewel when I was a kid, when  I got older I listened to it all the time)
4. Goodbye Alice In Wonderland (I always felt like this whole album was sort of a missed opportunity for Jewel)
5. Sweet and Wild (I really liked this album for some reason and I don't know why)
6. Let It Snow (I didn't want this but got hooked on it and listen to it all year long)
7. Greatest Hits (Cheating here but I really liked having most of the singles on an official release)
8. Perfectly Clear (It had potential but wasn't as good as Sweet and Wild)
9. Picking Up The Pieces (Too soon to really tell I think new album excitement is clouding my judgement could move up or down)
10. Joy (It is ok but feel it is the weaker of the 2 Christmas albums)
11. Lullaby (Meh.. There are like 2 or 3 songs that I really enjoy but that's it)
12. Pieces Of You (I never could get into this album no matter how hard I tried)
13. The Swingset goes Wee (This is just a stupid album no matter how you look at it)

Like Simon, I tend to make playlists as opposed to listening to albums in full, unless it's new or I feel like listening to the whole album but my ratings are:

1. Goodbye Alice In Wonderland (this is the album that made me an EDA. I really loved the lyrics on this album. I found them unusual and made me wonder just what she was talking about lol. I thought the imagery was really good. Long Slow Slide takes me to a circus and I just imagine the clowns on their breaks smoking and making wisecracks. Last Dance Rodeo always makes me think of a pub in really remote towns with strange people frequenting them).
2. This Way (I find myself not skipping any songs on this album).
3. Lullaby
4. 0304 (I really love this album. I don't understand why so many fans don't like the album apart from being snobs lol. Jewel merged folky lyrics with pop production and it works. I'd love to hear an acoustic of the album).
5. Pieces of You (until recently I wasn't a huge fan of this album. I really love songs like Little Sister, Painters, Don't, and Adrian which I always skipped.
6. Perfectly Clear (I remember being obsessed with this album when it came out. The only song I didn't really like was Till It Feels Like Cheating).
7. Spirit (again until recently I didn't give songs like Fat Boy, Jupiter, Innocence Maintained, Enter From The East, Barcelona but now I really like them)
8. Sweet and Wild
9. The Merry Goes Round (the only reason this isn't ranked higher is because it's a kids album but otherwise the melodies are really catchy).
10. Let It Snow
11. Joy

Picking Up the Pieces is too new to realistically rate but it'll probably end up being #2.

I think we did this in a previous thread on ye old board... however I like thinking about it, so...

1. Spirit (the BEST, imho.... love every song)
2. PoY (great songs, fell in love with Jewel.. brings back good 90's memories)
3. GAIW (no big explanation... I just love it)
4. 0304 (yeah, yeah, I know.. but its fun and I like most of the songs)
5. Joy - (my go-to Christmas album - this could be ranked higher but I only listen to it a few weeks out of the year, so...)
6. This Way (This one was just okay to me)
7. S&W (some okay songs.. country? Meh...)
8. PC (see #7)
9. Let it Snow (I was hoping this would be as good as Joy, but it was a bit of a lunchbox letdown. I don't think she used her voice to its full potential)

I've never listened to either Lullaby or TMGR in their entirety, so I can't really rate these (although I love Raven). Greatest hits can't be rated either, since its all recycled stuff. I haven't listened to PUTP yet - just snippets here and there. However, I'm getting the feeling by reading everyone's comments it's going to be waaaay up there!

I don't understand why some fans don't like Lullaby or haven't listened to it. It was the first real folky album since POY IMO. Raven, All The Animals, The Circle Song, Forever and a Day, Sov Gott, Daydream Land... Amazing. Even Brahm's Lullaby is gorgeous.

#truestory and "Dreamer" it's absolutely beautifull!

It's based on all of it, SMP!

And I agree with you guys, obviously, Lullaby is fantastic and I listen to it all the time.

Very much agreed. Lullaby and, to a lesser extent, Merry Goes Round were actually the main reasons why I was excited for PUTP. The production on both albums were more low-key than her past albums so I was hopeful about this one. I still had some doubts, of course, but for the most part I was really looking forward to it just because I felt we already got a taste of what she was capable of. :)

:flail:
Do you really expect a freak like me to be able to do this without asking for whhat criteria this is based on?  Song quality, production, commercial success... :crying:

Definitely not commercial success. I don't care about that stuff... if I like it, I like it. Mostly vocals, and lyrics. And catchiness, depending on the song, of course. (Something like Violet Eyes isn't exactly what I'd call 'catchy' but its a good song nonetheless).

ALL HAIL LULLABY!  :hail:

Hmm. Starting to think I should listen to Lullaby from beginning to end.

Maybe while I'm in bed.. just in case?

Lullaby is a good Jewel album if you skip twinkle twinkle little star. A few of them are just old songs (Raven, Circle Song). I mean, it's not like POY and Spirit are balls-to-the-wall.
Title: Re: Rank Jewel's Studio Albums
Post by: MattHas on September 14, 2015, 02:57:14 PM
Something about Spirit is very boring to me. It's weird cause I like a lot of the songs when done live, but the album itself just doesn't intrigue me at all. I'm not musically smart enough to know what it is... production or mixing or something i guess. But it's one of my least favorite albums. Tho better than The Merry Goes Round =P.

And this talk of the Christmas albums reminds me I can break them back into the repertoire, here in like two months! Tho again, I found I like Let it Snow (the album, not the countrified song) better than Joy.

1. Spirit (love every song, except 'This Little Bird', to me it's out of place on the album)
2. Picking Up the Pieces (love every song, 'Everything Breaks' and 'Here When Gone' are my all-time favorites)
3. Goodbye Alice in Wonderland (great album, I wish Jewel still performed 'Again And Again' and 'Drive To You')
4. Sweet and Wild/Mild (I just like it, especially 'Fading')
5. Pieces of You (I like every song, but rarely listen to 'Adrian' because it makes me cry)
6. This Way (good album, but I still cannot get into 'LMJLMA' & 'ENSS'; 'I Won't Walk Away' is my favorite Jewel's song)
7. 0304 (as it was said above, it's just fun)
8. Perfectly Clear (good, but I skip 'SW' and 'TIFLC')
It's hard for me to rate Children and Christmas albums, they are so different from albums above, but
9. Lullaby (beautiful songs, but I don't listen to it often)
10. Joy: A Holiday Collection (same, 'Face of Love' should've been a single and without Nedra)
11. Let It Snow: A Holiday Collection (good Christmas album)
12. The Merry Goes 'Round (I skip every song, except 'Penguins' and 'What I'd Do')
Title: Re: Rank Jewel's Studio Albums
Post by: Trevor on November 13, 2018, 10:38:52 PM
I have to give this some more thought on how I would rank the albums, but it's very tough because to be perfectly honest, not counting the Christmas albums and Merry Goes Round, the only Jewel song on an album I don't like is U & Me = Love. I can honestly say that I like every other song

So that means between POY, Spirit, This Way, 0304, GAIW, PC, Lullaby, Sweet and Wild and PUTP that's 119 songs, and I like 118 of them. That's a 99.2% success rate for Jewel in my eyes lol.

I can't believe Perfectly Clear could be called Perfectly Terrible! I love that album.

Now of course when you include Merry Goes Round it goes down... I'd have to think about it more. I don't hate every song on that album but I can't listen to them much. I think I would say I only truly dislike 7 of the 19 songs... I can enjoy others actually. They are cute and have a nice melody, and she sounds good on them. But that would bring it down to 94.2% when I throw that album in the mix. :P

Now the tough question is how to rank the albums... going to require more thought. I think I would still say PUTP is my number one...

She's yet to disappoint me. (Merry Goes Round wasn't a disappointment because I wasn't expecting to love it when I sat down to listen to it. Actually I was expecting to hate it more than I did)

the only Jewel song on an album I don't like is U & Me = Love.

I feel the same way about this song. IMHO, it's worse than every unreleased Jewel's song we've heard.
Title: Re: Rank Jewel's Studio Albums

I still cannot get into 'LMJLMA' & 'ENSS'

Now I love 'ENSS' so much! Especially "Sister Mary used to be a nun..." part, it's so playful
Title: Re: Rank Jewel's Studio Albums

ENSS is a really cute song. I've been listening to This Way a lot more lately... I never used to like this song but its growing on me now! I can't get enough of I Won't Walk Away.. I don't know where this song has been hiding in my Jewel collection lol. Her voice is fantastic, I listen to it on repeat.

One song I CANNOT get into no matter how many times I hear it is LMJLMA. I appreciate her trying to sound all rocky, but it doesn't suit her style. No, No, No. Just no.

That was a pretty great song when it first circulated as Angelfood because it was just so different from the usual, but I agree, it hasn't aged as well.
Title: Re: Rank Jewel's Studio Albums

I'm just gonna re-post what I said a few years ago when we did this on that other board. Not even sure how many albums there've been since then...

1. Spirit
2. This Way
3. PoY
4. Lullaby
5. GAiW
6. S & M
7. TMGR
8. PC
9. Joy
10. 0304

POY drops lower than I thought it would simply bec. of the number of songs I can't listen to any more - I've always hated Adrian & Painters, & I simply cannot hear Foolish Games any more. Sooooo overplayed on Muzak & TV appearances when it was a hit that I can't take it any more.

I've always thought that Spirit & This Way were over-produced, but after all these years I realize that there are so many songs on them that I really like lyrically that the production doesn't bother me as much as it used to.

Alice loses points for horrible versions of 2 of my favorite songs, Satellite & LDR. I like the majority of it, though.

The first disc of Sweet & Wild is such pop-country crap that I won't listen to it, but I enjoy the Mild version at times, so I'll give it a little credit.

If I ignore the songwriting on TMGR, I can make it through most of the disc. Her voice sounds really good, even if I am rolling my eyes at the lyrics.

I didn't remember a single song on PC before listening to it this time. But now I gotta say, Jess is right. That is a seriously terrible disc. Absolute garbage.

I hate Christmas. It offends me on every level. Joy is only saved from last place by The Travesty of the Pink Frisbee.

One thing that really struck me -- all the remade versions of songs from 0304 are just f*cking annoying. Whether they're dance-pop or pop-country, the songwriting is still inane on every single one of them. They're a waste of time no matter what genre they're recorded in.

...so, I'm only missing 2 albums. The second bullshit religious holiday one can go with the first, since they really don't count as separate albums, as far as I'm concerned. And PUtP definitely gets into the top 2 or 3, I think. Honestly, I can't even remember the last time I listened to her at all, but I know I really liked that album a lot when it came out, & thought it was the best thing she'd done in a LONG time.

In this thread, we rank Jewel's studio albums from favorite to least favorite.

Studio Albums

Pieces of You
Spirit
Joy: A Holiday Collection
This Way
0304
Goodbye Alice in Wonderland
Perfectly Clear
Lullaby
Sweet and Wild/Mild
The Merry Goes 'Round
Let It Snow: A Holiday Collection
Picking Up the Pieces

I'll start:

1. POY
2. Spirit
3. PUtP
4. Lullaby
5. GAIW
6. This Way (rough to choose btw 5 & 6)
7. 0304
8. Joy
9. Let It Snow
10. Sweet & Wild/Mild
11. The Merry Goes Round
12. Perfectly Clear AKA Perfectly Terrible :P

1. This way
This was my first full album i owned by Jewel and it changed my whole idea and world of music forever :)!

2. Spirit
For the „explosion“ of intelligent lyrics on here and the light production (i never found that it was overproduced) and some heartbreaking songs like fat boy and enter from the east, which are some of my all-time favorites.

3. Pieces Of You
Well it all started with this amazing album! The main hits, the signature songs and it still sounds so different when you compare it to anything else at that time! It’s really hard to compare NR.1-4 for me as i love them all very much :).

4. GAIW
This was the first „new“ jewel-album to come out for me after i had bought all the albums available at that time :) so i was very excited for it and i really love it to this day. A long slow slide, good day, gaiw and satellite are my favorites. Tough i never understood why Jewel rerecorded the 0304 version of fragile heart and not the other fragile heart which i really really like.

5. Lullaby
I was so happy to get a little bit of „classic“ Jewel in between her country years. My favorites are all the animals, raven and sov Gott.

6. PUtP
Similar like with lullaby, i was soo happy Jewel decided to make a new POY-styled album and not another country album. I like it’s acoustic approach with strings but it’s nearly too hard/sad for me to listen too - i still have to listen to it more :).

7. 0304
Intuition was the first song i ever heard by Jewel - gladly it swapped to the charts in europe in 2003 so i saw it on TV :D and i always loved the video and lyrics.
I always felt so sorry for the bashing and „sellout-theory“ of 0304 everywhere.. it got some nice tunes and still jewely lyrics (i mean stand and haunted are amazing!).

8. Sweet & Mild
This was just too country for me, although i liked that she put such very old songs like fading or summer homes on it (but i liked the original band version of fading much more). Funny thing, i guess it was the first album that didn’t use photos of the GAIW-shootings anymore ^^.

9. Perfectly Clear
I was so excited for this album after she left Atlantic but the production/arrangements and all these „non jewel exclusive songs“ just made it hard for me to like (and of course the country style). I was very sad about the studio version of Rosey & Mick and i still love the acoustic live version of it till today.

I never really was into the Christmas and merry go round-albums so i don’t count them as „classic“ Jewel albums :).

Does anyone know if it was a newly recorded version or the one back from POY?

I'm pretty sure it was a soundboard recording from her show in Baltimore the year before Sweet & Wild came out:
