Concord buys yet again in multi-million dollar deal with Warner (https://www.musicbusinessworldwide.com/concord-buys-yet-multi-million-dollar-deal-warner)
Sources in the independent community have told MBW that Concord has, in the past few weeks, fully acquired a bundle of recorded music rights as part of Warner’s post-Parlophone divestment process.
These recordings include the Atlantic catalogue of US Grammy-winning singer/songwriter Jewel, which covers her first five studio albums.
Jewel’s debut LP, Pieces Of You (1995), went 12-times platinum in the US market. Her follow-up, Spirit (1998), went four-times platinum.
Other catalogues in Concord’s Warner deal, we’re told, include albums by Brazilian legend Sergio Mendes, and various classic blues and jazz recordings.
They already own the stuff on Picking Up the Pieces.
Is this a sign of a reissue coming? :fun: It is all the rage these days and this is often the first step!

Omg that would be amazing. So much gold we don't know of. What if we never got Carnivore with a band because she intends to put out the OG version from 96?
I'm likely getting ahead of myself, but this is almost exactly the path Radiohead has taken and the OK Computer reissue is incredible. There was a disc 2 plus a 90 min tape of demo bits. Could you imagine something like that for Spirit?

Another little bit in the RH reissue is a couple sketch book reproductions... one's little doodles and poems and the other is production notes. I don't suppose the production notes would be all that interesting for POY, but the doodle book idea ...:fun:

Hell I wouldn't complain.. been a while since I spent more than I should on Jewel stuff! =P Plus it'd be fun to listen through for differences / new stuff.

When I was talking to Tracy, who doesn't come around anymore :( , we noticed that Lullaby is off Fisher Price and is now part of "Farmers of Light Music" as of 2016. There doesn't seem to be anything else on that one.
There's quite a bit of shifting around going on!

Is the artist involved in this stuff at all? Plus, I count 6 Atlantic albums, not 5, if Joy is considered. I also have seen EastWest listed as the record company on POY, along with Atlantic.

I guess this will all shake out eventually, and yeah, I'd definitely plunk down some cash for re-releases that include some cool bonus stuff!

This definitely sounds interesting, but as Randy alluded to, would any release need the artist's consent first? I'd love to have some all-new Jewel material from the mid 90s, but only if she's okay with it being released and takes some royalties. Otherwise it feels a little like exploitation?

Oh yeah, I would assume she'd be the one who determines whether or not there'd be a re-issue, but I could swear Jewel's said she was considering it already. I can't remember where I saw it, though.
I thought Randy was wondering if she had control over the sale to Concord. That question's a little different. Sometimes, yes, and sometimes, no. In this instance, it's hard to say. For one, she'd already signed with Concord for PUTP, but on the other hand, Concord has been on a huge buying spree the last few years and there's no way every artist had input in those acquisitions.

Glad to hear that Jewel gets to determine exactly what's released still. I've heard stories of artists leaving their labels and the label releasing their own 'best of' sets without the artist's knowledge (let alone permission), so it can get a little murky out there. Will be interesting to see what happens with this, some re-releases with bonus content could prove quite appealing!

Yeah, that's exactly what happened to Radiohead. After they got off their label, the label released a Greatest Hits and a bunch of boxset re-releases. Scummy behavior, but that's business. :/

I don't like it either. I've also stumbled on some of these re-releases recently - especially those five albums in one box deal - and the sound quality is really much worse than the original. So another slap in the face!
I guess rights and royalties are all different for each artist, but I have to say that I often find it confusing. I wish it would be standardised, but then I guess the industry doesn't revolve around my understanding of the contracts!
