Happy is an alright song, actually. Rocking the acoustic version right now and it's okay.
So's the Keep the Rainbow song. The Merry Goes Round isn't all that bad for a kids record.
-
Still haven't listened past the first five songs.
-
I was like that too Sandy lol. But I think it gets better as it goes on. If you take out the Sammy the Spider, the Supermarket Song, and Bucky the Bull the songs aren't half bad. The only really kiddy song on the album I really like are Sara Swan Sleepyhead.
The lyrics are a little childish being a kids record but the melodies are really pretty. I love Snooze Button Blues, In My Room, Give Me The Rainbow, and Just Like Penguins Do.
-
I do, too!
The way I ran into them was I was playing a random Jewel play list and a lot of the songs just fit right in!
Bucky the Bull and the others you listed were awful, though.
-
I was listening to it in my car and got into an accident (someone was changing lanes and I must have been in their blind spot - ran me into a parking lot and through a landscape of bushes). Haven't listened since.
-
:(
The same thing happened to me with Radiohead's The Bends - got in a bad wreck listening to it and it took years for me to set down and listen again. I guess the difference is that record was one of my all-time faves.
-
test message... please ignore me....
-
I hope the new book explains why her story about being homeless in SD keeps dramatically changing.
I'm listening to a radio show from '96 where she and her mom chose to move into their respective vans so they could be bohemian beach-dwelling buskers.
Conversely, I just read something recent where Jewel said almost the opposite of that- that she was a poor victim of an evil boss and she had to live in a pinto or something.
smh
-
I imagine it was all of the above. When she was younger she probably didn't think too negatively about living in her car, but growing older and realizing just how fucked up the situation was might've changed her perspective. At least, that's what I assume. I dunno.
-
Maybe, but there's still a huge difference between a little hatchback pinto and a van and going through the experience with your mom vs. only seeing her a couple times during this time period.
Massively inconsistent, I think.
When I was homeless, I didn't have a car. ::2
-
I don't know exactly where this fits on the board, but it's too awesome to not be here.

A lot of her stories are inconsistent. I remember sometime in the blur of the 90s, either hearing or reading about her and her mom each living in station wagons and how they would park in parking lots in side by side by spaces and how they were "in it together." Then in the Hard Rock Live episode she says she "sold it" (meaning her, green Datsun station wagon) and then she says it was stolen, but luckily she wasn't in it in other stories. Then there is making stained glass art in the back of her van...
I think she was living in vehicles longer than initially stated. I also think that A LOT of the stories were Nedra influenced.... :bs:
Not to say, she wasn't homeless, but I think that the Nedra influence on her career, interviews and so forth will be set a little straighter in the book. I had about a 5-7 minute convo with her mom in '97. :flail: I honestly think Jewel was kinda brainwashed by the desire to have her mom in her life and the fact that it's really hard to admit that the person you want to be closest to, is the one doing you the most harm. It's a sucky situation.
-

Yep, definitely.
I know how that feels, too.
Still, some of the bigger details change as the desired reaction changes, which is a little weird, but I think it's only a weirdo like me who would catch any of it - the casual fan would never know.
I bought a copy of Chasing Down the Dawn!
I also bought Thomas Jefferson - the Art of Power and I want to read that more! :lolsad:

Well, I noticed too. I always thought I was a casual fan...now I'm thinking not.
I just read CDTD last month in preparation for Never Broken. I suspect Nedra wrote it. Doesn't feel Jewel-esque, at all.
-
I read CDTD a few times, although its been awhile now. If I'm not mistaken, I think this is where I read the inconsistency in the sleazy boss/paycheque story. In the book, doesn't she say in the end her mother went in and demanded her boss gave her the paycheque, and he did? If that was the case, she would have been able to pay her rent, etc. If true, that would totally change the dynamic of her story going forward as she wouldn't have necessarily ended up 'homeless'.
-
Yeah, I really should at least graze through that book. Maybe it will all make sense in the next one, but the homeless/sleazy boss story has only been consistent since Nedra vanished from the picture.
PS: omg, I love "paycheque"
-

Hmm.. I don't get it?

Yeah, I really should at least graze through that book.
Seriously, it took me 2 hours to read it.

Obama takes a turn at reality TV in Alaska (http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-politics/wp/2015/08/31/obama-takes-a-turn-at-reality-tv-in-alaska/)
BUT
With stupid Bear Gryllis or whoever. It should have been a Kilcher. I don't think this Bear dude's even an American.
EDIT: He's not! :LoudMouth:
-
I honestly think some of the inconsistencies is because she tells part of the stories in bits and pieces and not as a whole. I just quickly googled and found these two old interviews:
This is a from a teleconference from 2000 promoting Chasing Down the Dawn:
http://articles.mcall.com/2000-11-03/features/3334388_1_jewel-book-deal-vw
Interviewer: `In your book you say that you made a decision with your mother to leave your apartment and move into separate VW vans.`
Jewel: `Mm-hmm` (indicating affirmatively).
Interviewer: `Can you explain that a little bit? Why would you move out of your apartment and into separate VW vans?`
Jewel: `It's better than living in the same one. I didn't actually have the money for a van at first. I lived in a little Datsun 550 hatchback and then borrowed some money from a friend to get a van. It explains in the book, it tells the whole story about me getting fired from my job and not having the rent.`
Interviewer: `Did your mother move into a van at the same time?`
Jewel: `Yeah, yeah. It was sort of a show of solidarity. She knew I was trying to do music, but I had very little time for it because I was barely making rent and couldn't afford food, much less toothpaste. You know, she could have gone and gotten her own apartment, you know, and made a living, too, but to make a show of solidarity and encourage my music, she did the same, and you know, it was a really great and very productive time in my life.`
And this is from 2007/8 promoting Fast Cars & Superstars:
http://www.wheels.ca/news/jewel-shines-on-the-race-track/
Q: What was the first car you ever owned?
A: It was a little Datsun 510 hatchback that a friend gave me and that’s the car I ended up living in actually when I ended up homeless.
Q: I’ve read a couple different accounts about you living in a Volkswagen van.
A: It was first my car and then that car got stolen, then I borrowed $1,000 from somebody to buy this van.
I got kicked out [of the place I was living] because my rent was due and I’d been late on rent. Every penny was going to rent. I couldn’t even afford food or anything and I was scraping food off of people’s plates where I worked as a waitress.
I had another job answering phones somewhere and this guy, the boss, asked me to have sex with him and when I turned him down, he decided not to pay me my paycheque and my landlord kicked me out ’cause I couldn’t pay the rent. That’s how I ended up living in my car.
First she said she just borrowed the money, then she said the car was stolen and she borrows the money. That doesn't really seem inconsistent, just her basically being straight forward. I dunno. I guess we'll see what she says in the book. :)
-
I know the story is relatively consistent from the 2000s - it's the 90s where it's all muddled.
ESPECIALLY the tone of it all.
"It was one of those things where you get bad job after bad job and you don't know what you want to do with yourself and you have the rest of your life to face consciousness. . . . Finally I just decided to move into my van and try to do something that I liked," she says, her smile giving way to a giggle, "and it worked!" Her 1979 Volkswagen van became her home.
Her mother, Nedra Carroll, says by phone from California, "It was my suggestion that we move into our respective vans and cut all this overhead. We would chose sites, park together, open our doors and have tea."
http://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/lifestyle/1996/02/01/the-hottest-thing-out-of-alaska/303d767e-3379-457e-9cb8-750420f25c29/
The difference in tone was enough to spawn this, too: http://www.cracked.com/article_16989_6-inspiring-rags-to-riches-stories-that-are-bullshit.html
Anyway, that was my quick google and most of what I've heard comes from the concert stories that have DEFINITELY changed w/r/t that event, although I wasn't able to google those. :P
-
Oh ha. I didn't know that was a Canadian thing, ay?
Like, poutine and Canadian bacon - or just ham to you, ay? :D

Comedy is one thing, but youtube comedy is something else! I don't trust most youtube users because the majority seem to try SO hard to be funny that it just comes off as embarrassing. But I'm "old" now, apparently, so I guess I just wouldn't get it. ;) :grandma:

Random musing whilst listening to the tail-end of 0304 in the car today.
In 'America', the f-bomb is censored - but was there ever a version released with the expletive actually included?
I'm guessing not, but there's a small chance that my CD is some kind of clean, international version, or something.
-
Mine's censored, too.

Nah, all copies are censored. I remember her saying something about how it's like a small commentary on censorship in the US. :)

Ah, I was trying to find the interview where I read it and I finally did! From Aug. 2003. :)
http://www.eltonjohnworld.com/index.php/archives/old-news-special/3643-backstagechasingthejewelin
BT: You bleep out the word "fucking"-why do you do that?
J: [laughs] I always get real funny about it because I curse quite a lot in my daily life.
BT: I found it very strange that you censor it- the word sticks out more because you do.
J: I like talking about censorship, and sometimes the best way to do that is to put it in the song. It's ironic to me. Nobody else will probably think it's very funny, but I get a kick out of it because it's silly. It's a kind of denial.

I love Jewel
It was so nice of her to retweet Cher's film. What a gal!
I hope we can see it! It's nowhere near it's goal right now, though. :(
Help? https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/don-t-just-talk-about-it#/

There's a new "Pulse of Americana" playlist on Spotify.
...
Jewel's not on it. :(
-
Ya know - I have no clue where or what stations are playing her. I was in a Taco Bell, and she came on after Rage Against the Machine  It was MFD.
I also hear her in regular rotation at the grocery store. Which is usually from GAIW - wait, maybe it's her Greatest Hits. Either way, it's not the new album. :shrug2:
-
To me, it is a cold reminder of two things:
1. Record companies do a lot more than the general public gives them credit.
2. Spotify is definitely in the above's pocket - even more than I first imagined.
There's no Jewel in any playlist - not even the acoustic coffee shop ones. Who's more coffee shop acoustic than Jewel? Apparently covers of Taylor Swift songs by people I'd never heard of who apparently have record companies behind them.
-
I honestly have no idea how the whole SirusXM thing works vs. radio. :grandma:
Speaking of Taylor Swift, did you notice her throwback look - I swear she was trying to look like Jewel c.1996-97 in that black outfit in the Shake It Off video.
-
I think I've seen that video. I can't remember.
I like name dropping Taylor Swift a lot as you've noticed but I really don't follow the kid. I'm sure she's very nice, though!

No, it really wasn't worth the effort. Some things are sacred. She is a straight up, Barbie buying (although she kinda moved into Monster High), hick. Me and the extendeds don't discuss music. (Dueling Banjos plays in the distance...)

At our family vacation in Florida in June, my 21 y/o, music major, niece, asked who was the artist on the CD playing in the car? (Goodbye Alice in Wonderland) I told her it was Jewel, my brother-in-law responded with, Jewel was a new age, pop singer popular in the '90's. :o
In the end she said she liked her and would check out more Jewel music. :bump:
Me and the extendeds don't discuss music. (Dueling Banjos plays in the distance...) :rofl2:

So, what ever happened to the "off-line" EDA's? Do they still do the annual litter pickups and homeless blankets/food back stuff? Or, did that run out of steam?
Sorry! But, i totally forget the name of the guy that used to organize that.
-
That ran out of steam, I think. I never see anything about it at all.
-
homeless blankets/food back stuff?
food bank stuff. Ugh, autocorrect!
The guy that invented autocorrect is going to a special hell where millions of people constantly talk to him and nothing they say makes any sense... but maybe it does because it's close to making sense if he could *just* figure it out... but it doesn't.
Autocorrect is a horrible horrible thing. But, I don't even feel good about his fate. That is going to be an awful eternity.
And, yes, I remember ducksoup... and I think the mailing list might actually still be going. But, it was another guy that did the charity stuff... Mike maybe? oh well never mind.
-
 aw, it's alright. By now, I think humanity is accustomed to seeing past most autocorrect errors. I knew what you meant. ;)
-
Yes, most folks know the ducking frustration of autocorrect. ;)

Dam Wright!

It always want to change the word 'van' on me. DAMMIT, VAN IS A WORD TOO YOU STUPID PHONE!!

I have mine turned off. It's inconvenient sometimes, but I'd rather the typo be mine than some robot's misinterpretation of life.

My mom is really really getting into Jewel more. I mean, she already liked her, but after me winning a Mother's Day contest for her and getting a copy of Lullaby, she would listen to that album a lot. And then over the years she would ask what's going on with Jewel. And then we both went to TexFest together and afterward she'd keep asking about the people she met. And now with all of these appearances, she's been watching past and present interviews. She watched Jewel's first Howard Stern interview and was talking about what she did/didn't talk about vs. what she talks about now. And the last thing my mom asked about? When is Jewel gonna put together another EDA show because now she wants to go! She had to miss it last year because she couldn't take time off work on relatively short notice. :( If it's in Nashville again she said that'd be a great road trip. :) Hell, if any fan gathering happens then I'm sure she'd still want to go! I converted my own EDA without even meaning to. :tongue2:
-

Yes, I'm glad it does! (it was a thing at my computer, still doen't know what, but rebooting helped)
not much time tonight though. I'm going to a concert of a Dutch lady singer/songwriter.

My Mom is enjoying some of Jewels "country music" sounds, and enjoyed the articles about Jewel appearing with Johnny & June Carter Cash at the Royal Albert Hall shows in London. Johnny & June were Moms favorites and I was dragged all over Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky to there shows in the 1960s, Mom doesn't travel any longer but she still enjoys the music. ;)
It is great your mom enjoyed the EDA functions and can still travel to share it with you.

Still haven't listened past the first five songs.
And now? :music:

Why so serious? In the cover photo, I mean. She looks ready to kill.

Life is really weird sometimes.

Anyone else see Coldplay's new album cover and immediately think of Jewel?
-
Still haven't listened past the first five songs.

Nope. I'll never get thru TMGR. And I'm totally ok with that.
-
I don't think the songs are childish. The more you listen, the more you hear.
-
I like the Give Me The Rainbow song enough to keep it in rotation. There are some p bad ones on there, though, that are completely unlistenable.
-
Thats what id do, is a good song :)
-
I still have the Merry Goes Round cd in shrink wrap :w
-
I love Sara Swan Sleepy Head. The bridge especially with the harmonies sounds great. :)

Wait, who the hell is Wendy Williams?
-
She's a lady who has a p funny daytime talk show. She talks loads of poo on various celebrities and I actually like her. I'm just being bitter. ;)
-
So, she just randomly said this? What was this in reference to? :grandma:
-
I went to watch the whole segment this morning and then I had to work. :( I just heard the teeny bit where she talks trash and I didn't listen very well.
-
I guess I'm curious because it seems like such a random and mean insult. Especially, if unprovoked.
-
Yeah, it's definitely unprovoked - it's what WW does!
-

Well, this explains why I have no use for her.
Ya know, I got my teeth fixed. Spent a small fortune on it. Biggest mistake, ever.
-
I think she's p funny, honestly. I don't know a tenth of the people she's talking about, but it's hilarious! She's got the snake neck move and everything when she's dropping tea - hilarious!

I know nothing of this, daytime tv, you speak of.
I swear, I live in a vacuum.
-
Wendy is hilarious! Even if she's raggin on Jewel. I saw her a gay pride in Philly a few years ago. She was the emcee at the end of the parade party.
-
Ugh, I can't stand Wendy Williams. To me she's just annoying and tries too hard to be funny.

A little random tidbit, but I was watching Alaska: The Last Frontier tonight, first time in quite a while that I have since it airs the same time as Walking Dead, and after the regular showing there was a sorta Christmas special where everyone exchanged Secret Santa gifts. Throughout the whole episode there are bits of trivia displayed at the bottom, kinda like Pop-Up Video. When it got to Jane's gift to Atz Lee she decides to write a song for him. The bit of trivia that showed up? A woman named Mary Epperson taught her music when she was young. :) I did some searching and found these tweets that I had forgotten:
(The link she sent: http://homernews.com/stories/072308/letters_a4_004.shtml )
Pretty neat. :)
-
This is very neat, good detective work. :grlcomp:
I enjoy Alaska the Last Frontier, show. Following Atz Lee & Jane through the accident ordeal.
-
Listening to the show at the Intersection in Michigan back in '96, and Jewel changed the lyrics to I'm Sensitive ... it's adorable.
However, she says something about giving food to everyone who lives in a .... hot dog .... and you can hear someone in the audience say, "what?"
Also - she says Java Joe of Java Joe's is the one who fired her for not sleeping with him! :o
-
Glad it wasn't Javo Jay's or something like that...
-
Also - she says Java Joe of Java Joe's is the one who fired her for not sleeping with him! :o
Really? Was that in addition to her boss at a computer warehouse?
-
Apparently that version of the ol' story was popular enough to be a requested ad-lib at the show.
Kinda makes you wonder if it was both, or only one, or what? Kinda perplexing considering what a common story it's become now.
If it was Java Joe, why on Earth would she play there? I sure as fuck wouldn't have shit to do with a guy like that, let alone make him more money. Weird.
-
Also - she says Java Joe of Java Joe's is the one who fired her for not sleeping with him! :o
Really? Was that in addition to her boss at a computer warehouse?
I think she was confused... or she just said it at the time because it was a good story, no matter which boss it was. I find it hard to believe it would happen twice to her - if it did I'm sure we would have heard the Java Joe story more than just this one time!
-
:shrug2:
I worked at a movie theater where I was repeatedly sexually harrassed by the manager, because I needed the job. I did finally leave, but not before I had enough for my latest mortgage payment. Sexism in the work place is rampant.
-
Jewel responded to one of Amanda Palmer's (goddess!!!) tweets. OMG, if they did a song together, it would probably be the greatest thing ever committed to record.
If you want to hear a darker Jewel, that would be a guaranteed delicious abyss.
-
Just heard a little of Jewel's Hands on Wait Wait ... Don't Tell Me in reference to Trump!
-
Did anyone hear Trisha Yearwood sing Hands on The Passion Live? I missed it but the song is available for purchase. Soooooooooo good! Fell in love with it all over again.
-
I saw a tweet about it but I haven't heard it yet!
What's The Passion Live? I've never heard of that.
-
I saw about 5 minutes of the Passion. It came on after Nascar....around 8pm EST. I couldn't sit through it. It was supposed to be, the story of Jesus as told through popular music.
-
Yearwood's performance of Hands starts at about 26:50 in this link: http://www.fox.com/watch/648874051995/7813905408
EDIT: meh.

This started in the netherlands and after years of big succes, even a lot of people who are not christian or anything, the concept flew over to other country's. Over here 1 at 10 people at least is watching it

Love it!
-
Aw, shucks, Jess! Thanks :) And it's your tabs that she's using!!! I wanted to be sure that was noted because you're amazing for all the tabs you have contributed to the wiki!
I only recently re-installed Twitter on my phone to request Without You By My Side. If I hadn't, I would have missed the notification! Been really busy transitioning the wiki to mediawiki. Can't believe how time consuming it is! And how big the wiki's gotten!
-
We're all so proud of you, Robby. You've got the best Jewel site on the internet by a mile - even Jewel herself thinks so!!
A completely unsolicited Tweet from the mighty Jewel herself - how awesome! I can only think of MrBB who can also claim that honor - that's some pretty amazing company you keep on that short list.

Yes Robby we all agree, awesome! :that:
Great work on the tabs, Jess,
-
I love the wiki. I've gone there several times to try and get dates correct in my head. It's a great resource.
I agree, great job with the tabs, Jess. Usually, when you go searching for guitar tabs they're wrong off the bat. Great combo.

My fave morning radio show mentioned Jewel twice this week. First they were talking about people who are attracted to imperfections on others - someone had a friend who only dated girls with big noses, etc. The snaggletooth came up and Steve said "like Jewel!" Then today, they had a guest in the studio from Alaska and once again, Steve said "Jewel is from Alaska." Of course I had to tweet them to tell them she is in town and they should try to get her in studio. Or course, it won't happen. Still funny to hear her mentioned twice on a rock station.
-
They're a pretty popular show in that region, too, aren't they? She'd probably have done it!
-
Yup. The number one morning show in the Philadelphia area.
-
I'm thinking of buying this golden cd from Pieces of you, I just don't know the history behind it, so I'm not sure yet.
What do you guys think of this item:

So....we have a monthly team call at work. It's a feel good call - not a "business" call. So we all submit things from our personal lives (one colleague makes amazing cakes, someone just ran the Boston marathon, suckers got married, had kids etc). So I posted my pics of Cope and Jewel as my April celeb stalking. I got many chuckles about Jewel and jokes about her thinking I'm a stalker and being afraid of me. A new colleague piped up and said I need to contact her and chat about Jewel's early days. She was present and has lots of stories to tell me about her experiences with her. I'm on it and will let you know anything unusual that she has to say.
-
Email from my co-worker who worked at the Innerchange:
We need to chat about that sometime. I was there way back when before Jewel was Jewel. When her teeth were messed up, she was overweight and living in a minibus. She was always so sweet. I worked at the coffee shop she was found at. Our performers were paid in coffee as we had no money. But I would always smuggle the performers some cobbler as well. Jewel would never take any and would say that Miss Nancy said coffee, not coffee and cobbler. She was crazy of course, because that cobbler was the best in the world!!
-
 that's adorable!
So cool that you have a co-worker who was actually there!
-
I know!
She called me a rock star in an email yesterday (for a work related thing) and I responded with "I'm no Jewel" which prompted this. Hopefully we will meet face to face one of these days and I'll totally stalk her. haha
-
More emails...we are not getting much work done today:
[Catrina]
Wow! That is so cool!!! What a great bonus you get with all of the friends. I guess I never considered that might be a perk. I always assumed it was mostly nuts (:
And yes the Innerchange. Sadly Jewel was the only big name that didn't come back for the many benefits held to keep it open. But I forgave her of that many years ago (: There was some amazing talent that came out of that little place. Just talking about it makes me want to smoke. I quit smoking years ago, but back then it was the 90's and we were cool so we smoked a lot!!!
[Sandy]
Aww...she speaks of it fondly. Wish she would have. Probably brainwashed by that bat s*** crazy mother of hers back then.
[Catrina]
Jewel was very controlled early on. I have a performing child so I applied what I saw back then to how not to be a stage mom now (:
-
Very interesting!
-
Very cool Sandy! Keep us posted if you hear more! :)
-
I have a team meeting in NY next month, and you know I'll corner Catrina for all the info she has. haha

I love the copies (mostly Angel food) from the Innerchange days, her interaction and banter with the audience is priceless for me. My favorite is the "Live at the Innerchange Coffee House 1994" :jewelsmilie:
Please keep the forum folks updated with your co-workers memories and your interaction. :bump:

Testing...

Oh. This is weird. I'm trying to post an embedded tweet and some of my own scribblings and I get a "Forbidden" page...
-
I removed the tweet embed- is that a problem now or did I screw it up? Anyway...regarding Alan's tweet and link to FB and the short Jewelstock video:
We thought the sound was off until I turned the volume way up and discovered that she was whispering. And can someone enlighten me? What's the significance behind "PattiSmithPattiSmithPattiSmithPattiSmith..."?
-
And now I can post it. Weird.
-
I'm soooo old! :'(
-
I think the story is she's "channeling" Patti Smith? I can't remember. I think that's it, though.
-
Patti Smith played before she took the stage right?

I am so happy that my boy friend Randy turn me on to Jewel she is so amazing,I love to hear her sing.Thank you baby you are so amazing to me ,I love you so much ,just as much as you love me. :blueguitar:

 I love posts like this
She's amazing. I turned her on to Jewel and she just dove in head first. She's read the books, heard all of my Angelfood as well as the studio albums, been with me to a couple of shows. She's settled on some of her own favorite Jewel songs, and had me burn 'em onto some CDs so she can listen all the time. That's probably 20-25 different CDs, by the way. I'm not even kidding.
-
Found a random Jewel mention whilst reading Chris Jericho's latest autobiography.
Nothing hugely interesting, but he talks about the Raw guest hosts back in 2009-10, and Jewel and Ty get a brief mention following their appearance in February 2010.
"There was only so much I can do if the host was uninterested (Bradley Cooper), uninformed (Jeremy Piven), or unexciting (Jewel and Ty Murray)..."
So there you have it. On the plus side, she didn't appear in his list of the five worst hosts, so that's something! Actually, I remember that she was on crutches at the time - so that probably didn't help.
-
It was a pretty terrible appearance.
-
I never really looked very hard to find video of their Raw appearance, and it seems now that the effort I didn't make was...totally worth it!
-
I listen to Jewel 24-7 can,t sleep with out her CD playing,my poor Randy .But he is right there with me so.I Love him so much.
Jewels Cd is in my car and my bed room, living room ,just every were.I love to here her ,because if I,m upset her CD,s calm me down.Thank you baby I love you.

I think your comma key is stuck, babe.
:grlcomp:
Also: Is anyone else fascinated by the Twitter exchange over the last few days regarding Jewel's shelved 2nd album? She and Alan have both chimed in on it.

Funny honey, I love you anyway.Ha Ha Ha. That,s just me.You love me any way.

I was for a second, but as usual it only garners "nope, you're all wrong and it's a big secret/we can't remember!!!" info and I'm sick of it. Release info on it or don't, people. Otherwise, it's just a tease and I'm not falling for it again.

Yeah.. truth.
-
I'd love to hear a studio version of Jessica, but only if the guitar is tuned low like it is in the low quality version - not if it's tuned up to standard like the semi-decent recording of the song we have with the muck-up in it.
We already have badass acoustic versions of the rest of the songs, so fudge it. The album was released for free and it's called JewelStock. Nothing more to really see here.
-
Not that amazing can,t get my comma,s right lol.Love you babe.
-

I'm coming around to this point of view, the more I think about it. We've heard all the songs. And live Jewel songs, historically, have been superior to album versions by and large. Eh, maybe we're better off just keeping the myth and mystery surrounding the album anyway. The possibility that the recordings suck is always there, too!

Yeah, them grapes are probably sour anyway :P

Yeah, the only song I'm really interested in for obvious reasons is Tough Girl. And the whole band sets from JewelStock. WE NEED THESE THINGS, DAMMIT!

I wish Jewel had sang at my wedding. So jealous.

The video's actually pretty well done. Still weird, though.
It reminds me of something I heard on the radio years ago. The DJ comes on and says, "And now, here's the love theme from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre." Immediately followed by this:

I about fell over laughing; I don't know why.

Uhmm That Texas chainsaw massacre is incredibly disturbing. Way to ruin one of my favourite Jewel songs.

I was the only student in yoga last night, so my instructor had a special class for me. First of all, she made me do a gentle practice b/c she says I am "an animal," so she forced me to slow down last night. Then she put on Jewel and my practice was 60 minutes of stretching to our girl. Ahhhh.....

Yaasss

Somehow or other, I lost the PUTP downloads while cleaning up and re-arranging our music folders for Media Player and Roku. Actually, I almost bumped the old thread from album release time to post this, but decided against it! We have the CDs still, so I could have ripped 'em, but I figured looking at my old orders at the Jewel store might be worth a shot.
They're still there, ready to be downloaded again, so I did! :woohoo: That really surprised me.
Luckily, I'd already burned Violet Eyes onto a CD for Georgianna last year, or I'd have been back here with hat in hand, begging for it. :hide:

Jewel was in the documentary Heckler - y'all probably knew this, but I didn't - by Michael Addis. I learned today he made the Hitchhiker Joe video for Steve Poltz. Read it in this interview with Steve: http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/entertainment/music/sd-et-music-steve-poltz-20170705-story.html
Jewel at about 9 minutes in the below:

...and then briefly at 9:37 in the below:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Z-tx7E-KjE
Then "I'm Sensitive" starts out part 6 - but only a teensy bit of it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRdwkTTUPT0
That's all the Jewel I saw in it. It was a pretty good film, honestly. There's one little bit in the part video where some reporter is reading off a bunch of awful comments about Paris Hilton directly to her on camera and she looked so sad and distant ... It's really stuck with me :(
-
For those who didn't know, here's the Hitchhiker Joe video referenced above. Jewel's in it.

I was MySpace friends w/ Michael Addis for a bit way back in those days, & had a few IM conversations w/ him. Pretty cool & funny guy, & a bit off-the-wall, which shouldn't surprise. I think I ended up un-friending him there bec. he had too much stuff that kept bogging down my dial-up every time I tried to view his page. :tongue2:

I didn't do a thread for it because I really don't have a lot of info yet, but last night's show in Kelowna, BC, featured Jewel fronting A BAND.

I feel like a bad fan for having to Google that line... fair to say that the lyrics of 0304 aren't exactly my strong point! I'm impressed though. Hope your bruised (not broken) finger is making a swift recovery!

That's okay Simon, I think I'm one of the rare breeds on this board who actually really likes 0304. And 2 Find U holds a bit of a special place in my heart, so I know it really well.

Very cool. I occasionally hear random Jewel songs (ie not necessarily 'hits') at the grocery store, piped in by their muzak or whatever they use these days...

Was having a little clearout earlier, and stumbled on this pretty big promo poster I had pinned up at uni in 2003 (yes, I'm old!)
Considered saving it, but it had so many folds and creases that I just took a photo for nostalgia and sent it on its way...
Always remember preferring the European cover art for 0304, shown in the bottom left corner, but typically I jumped the gun and imported the North American version the day it came out. Always wondered why they were different, but this was fairly commonplace at the time wasn't it? I know Pieces of You had a different cover too, and a few non-Jewel albums also did this.
Edit: Oops, not sure what's going on with the photo. I thought I'd rotated it! It definitely wasn't pinned to the wall this way around.

Ya ALL ... Quiet Warrior and V12 Cadillac are on Spotify. Did anyone else notice this?

Ahh, that makes sense now. I was very confused and got excited for a moment, thinking I missed Jewel getting in a Twitter war with Trump. I would quite enjoy that and I think she could take him easily.

Really wish this was a better photo so we could zoom. Anyone know what the last two in the bottom row are? Obviously the second one is Humphrey's by the Bay, but I've never seen a CD version of it before. The one next to it I have no clue... that photo looks like one of the ones from the Greatest Hits photo shoot, but I've never seen anything with that album cover...

Yeah, I looked all through discogs and didn't see anything with that album cover. That picture I believe is from a 2013 photo shoot, so it's gotta be something from the last 5 years.
Unless I'm wrong and it's an older photo, but I could've sworn it was

Anyone else think that the cover for the This Way single would have been a better cover for the album? I love this picture.
I would make the album cover the single cover and the single cover the album cover.

They both are not in my collection and I checked discogs at well. If you find out anything new about it I really like to know as well.
I love bootlegs! especially hard copy's!
I don't know what frontcover I like most, both are nice and reminds me about her European tour.

Regarding this:
There's probably a misconception because that was literally the story until pretty recently!
https://www.rollingstone.com/music/features/jewel-19981224
It was after Nedra had to quit her job because of a temporary heart ailment that she suggested that Jewel cut down on living expenses and "make herself available to her dream" by moving into a van. Nedra moved into a van as well, for solidarity. Mom lasted six months, Jewel a year.
"I feel like a comic book," Jewel says about the whole story.
https://www.rollingstone.com/music/features/cosmic-girl-19970515
When she arrived in Southern California, Jewel worked in a series of crappy jobs and lived out of her car. The desperate feeling returned. "When you're so poor that you can't find food," she says, "and you're scraping food off of people's plates in restaurants to take home, it's degrading." She pauses for a moment, concentrating on the flickering candle. "And I would let bosses flirt with me, because they would take me out to dinner. I'd say, 'I'm not interested in you.'" She switches tenses again: "But you still played the game."
Money was a constant worry. "Once I let a kidney infection go too long," says Jewel, "and we went to all these doctors' offices, and they'd refuse me. Antibiotics are $60 to $100." Which, needless to say, Jewel and her mother did not have. "I'm in the car, throwing up all over myself, and my mom would get refused by one clinic after another. And seeing my mom walk out of the clinics, it was damaging to my spirit. It just made you angry. Nobody gave a shit." She gives a little shrug: "Nobody had to."
After Jewel was fired from another job, she decided then and there to sing for a living: "I thought, 'This is it. My life's a mess. I have to do what I love or die.'" Borrowing money from a boyfriend, she upgraded her living space (a van!), moved in and began to sing in a coffeehouse.
https://www.irishtimes.com/culture/glittering-girl-1.114306
So, when did Jewel live without passion? "It all came to a head when I was 18, y'know, that point where you have to decide whether to stay at school, or get a job," says Jewel, admitting that, yes, the impoverished circumstances of her life at that point also added to her state of emotional inertia. "It sucked, for sure," she continues. "But at least I wasn't 40, hadn't a family, was on my own and could live in a car. And, as I said, I learned to believe that things must change for the better.

Kilcher graduated from the high school knowing she loved music, but unsure of what to do with herself. She relocated to San Diego to be with her mother, but the two of them struggled to make rent.
We would chose sites, park together, open our doors and have tea."
http://people.com/archive/pieces-by-jewel-vol-54-no-21/
After graduating from high school, Jewel moved to the warmer clime of San Diego, where her mother had relocated in 1991. Working as a waitress and answering phones, she had little time for her music and songwriting. It was her free-spirited mother who suggested that they move out of the apartment they shared and live in their VW vans in order to save rent money while Jewel tried to launch her music career. In 1993 Jewel, whose mom sometimes parked her van next to her daughter’s, signed a recording contract with Atlantic Records. “When I first got signed,” says Jewel, “I got $100,000. I put it in the bank and did not touch it. My mom was like, ‘Jewel, we need groceries.’ It was hard for me to get a grip on the fact that this wasn’t the only money I would ever make and that I wouldn’t have to go back to my van.”
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/4716965/Jewel-control.html
After a brief spell in art school in Michigan, she headed for San Diego. Desperately unhappy, suffering chronic illness due to weak kidneys, working in dead-end waitressing jobs and wondering what she was going to do with her life, Jewel received some rather unusual advice from her mother: why not cut down on living expenses and 'make herself available to her dream' by moving into her car. Jewel duly lived in a VW camper van for a year, washing in public conveniences. Concentrating on songwriting and performing, she had landed herself a record deal by the time she was 18. And the rest was? well, a lot of hard work, actually.
There are scores and scores of these.

Kase's new puppy looks an awful lot like George, yes?
-
Same breed, different colors. Shih Tzus are my fave! Our family had two and they were both the best damn dogs we ever had. I've been contemplating getting one through a rescue for the last few months. I think the kitties would be okay with a little pup. But I'm not ready to commit to that just yet.
-
Really random question here, but bear with me...
At the end of Just Like Penguins Do during TexFest 2011, any idea what Jewel says at the 4:19 mark at the end of the song? Really love this performance (moreso than the eventual studio recording) and listen to it fairly often. Always kinda irks me that I can't quite figure it out. Sounds like "Good..."?
Pretty sure nobody else is even remotely bothered, but thought I'd throw it out there. Anyone else listen to this show pretty regularly? Still really love it. Even the pre-show music that night was awesome, turned me onto Holly Williams and even a bit of Anya Marina.
-
I even tried watching the video and I have no idea

I even tried watching the video and I have no idea
Well thanks for trying though! Not sure why it bothers me, just always leaves me wondering everytime I play it through.
Always felt that the album version of Penguins was a little over-produced compared to the acoustic version, but it was always going to be really. The chorus feels quite 'Disney' to me, but I'm veering off on a tangent now...

I feel ya! I have a version of Memoirs of a Housewife (Totally Tupperware) where she mumbles something before she starts singing that I can't make out even though I've listened to it a thousand times and it bugs me too! lol.

Does it sound something like, "It's a rock opera...it's a folk opera!"?

Yup that's the version Randy!! It's where she says "Totally Tupperware... blah blah blah blah....." lol. She mumbles something there and I can't make it out! lol It's probably something really dumb or insignificant but it's always bothered me.

I could totally see Jewel doing this!
Did I ever tell the story of the time I had front row center seats for one of her shows and my friend and I wound up being a little late and she stopped the whole show mid song and was like:
:muntz:
I bet he didn't call her hunty to her face. He probably would have gotten his wig split Alaskan Grizzly style.
-
I find it funny when she stops the show like that. I can't picture her doing the hair appointment thing... is this person credible?
Whatever... I love Jewel anyway. She was a total sweetheart when I met her
-
Heh. I'd imagine every artist has gone through a "Don't you know who I AM?" period. Might have been the Atlantic people bulldozing her through the dude, too. Doesn't bother me.
-
Halp!
I can't seem to get this to download and I need it in my life: http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=627130
It says there are peers on dime, but my bittorrent isn't registering any of them. I think they're mad at me because I was supposed to change some router/modem setting to drop some kind of security feature but I can't do that. We both work from home and security is hella important.
:crying:
Edit:
Jewel recorded from FM. This is a new fresh transfer and so will differ from any or all previous uploads.
I've seen her perform a number of times and while her writing and presentation are excellent, her vocals are amazing. Enjoy this set; I did.

Dime stopped working for me awhile back and I never bothered to get it working again... Maybe this will be worth it?
-
It's soundboard and it isn't one I've seen around before. It's a rare gem. Most of what's been on dime lately has been awful tape recordings.
-
I've been quietly reporting those awful political extremists who tweet the nastiest things at Jewel after they watch the Roast of Rob Lowe and Twitter's been banning them one-by-one.
Got the fifth today.
Feels good, man.

Song I've been listening to a lot lately: Again and Again.
God I love this song. Sometimes I forget how much. Hadn't listened to it for a while. Was one of my first Jewel songs because the first whole album I had was the iTunes Originals one (weird, I know). It's the first song on there and I knew right away that I was going to fall in love with Jewel. Her voice is beautiful on this song, really sweet lyrics, great music... what a great track!
-
Pretty sure I just spotted a picture of Jewel on the daughter's wall in The Sopranos. Check the bottom right...
She also had a big poster of Tori Amos on her wall. :D

Probably nothing different.

Found this http://www.jewelwiki.com/wiki/Winter_of_Love
Is the song available? What year is it?
-
I think she only shared lyrics for that song back in 2009...never played it that I'm aware of.
https://www.jeweljk.com/news/jewel/winter-of-love-8
(also that's now returning a 404 with a sad face meme)
.....
This is frustrating--my usual ways of finding things aren't working--that particular blog post isn't on Archive.org either, but you can see the intro to the post on this Archive.org page:
https://web.archive.org/web/20091126100031/http://www.jeweljk.com:80/?content=news (https://web.archive.org/web/20091126100031/http://www.jeweljk.com:80/?content=news)
The particular blog posts in which she was sharing lyrics are missing from the current archives on her own website (they should be here (https://www.jeweljk.com/news?page=20), but aren't). It looks like a lot of her blog is wrong (dates mixed up and posts missing). Somebody goofed during the transition to her new site I guess?
Google's cache doesn't work either...I knew I should have been mirroring or downloading her blog posts so they wouldn't get lost.

Thank you for the info. Looks like Jewel's site was way more interesting and informative back then.

To my eyes, Goodbye Alice in Wonderland is the most beautiful album cover I've ever seen. That's SUCH a pretty picture of Jewel. The pose, the hair, the smile, she seems so peaceful... just gotta say I love that cover.
And yeah, there's a little bit of cleavage to wash it all down.

Discovered a singer/singwroter called Haley Klinkhammer when I was out and about earlier, and quite liked her song 'Once Upon a Time'. Was scrolling through her Twitter feed, and one of the first things I found was this recent cover of You Were Meant For Me!
Doesn't quite have the same charm and playfulness of Jewel's original, but the vocals are really clean, and it's a pretty solid performance. Nice to hear a different take on it after all these years too. What does everyone think?

I think it's a great cover. The video is lovely. I like how the lyrics are used in it. It's sad that there are lots of music videos that have no connection to the lyrics of a song

I treated myself to a listen of the Joy CD on my way to work this morning (the actual CD too, which was a novelty!) Must be the first time I've listened to it from start to finish for years and years. Still really like, and can't believe this year is actually the 20th anniversary of its release. Does feel a bit uncomfortable listening to those duets with Nedra, given what's come to light over the years.
Am now listening to Let It Snow for comparison, and I think I actually prefer this one - which is strange, as I always I assumed Joy was my favourite of the two. Maybe it just feels fresher, as I haven't outplayed it to the same extent yet.
Happy holidays y'all :santa:

I was hoping Let it Snow would become my ride or die when it was released.. but alas, despite Nedra's involvement I absolutely love my Joy CD! (That being said I can't listen to This Little Bird from Spirit, it makes me cringe every time so I skip it). I listen to Joy constantly over the month of December. Because its only one month out of the year I never get sick of it! :santa:
-
I've really tried to love Let it Snow, but Joy remains superior in every way IMO. Arif Mardin really brought out the best in her, especially considering it was recorded in the midst of the Spirit tour.
We listen to both often, and not just this time of year! I'm just as likely to hear them in [insert random month here] as December. Georgianna's just giddy about everything Christmas 24/7/365: Music, movies, all of it.
-
I just received the album in vinyl. it took more than a month to arrive at the record store (I had to order it, since Jewel is (almost) no longer active in Europe for decades).
But men, I hate this record, I own 2 or 3 versions on cd and one on vinyl (the silver one from Barnes & Noble will remain on the want list) but the new ones will stay in plastic.
Why do I hate this record? When it comes to Christmas I'm worse than the :grinch:
That being said, why do I own 4 different copies? Hey...of course, I collect everything from the women with the golden throat.

Well, she won't BE in Darlington SC obviously, but Jewel's singing the national anthem for the NASCAR race tomorrow night (whacky 2 races per week schedule to make up for all the time missed) and we're fans so we'll be watching anyway. It's on FS1 but we don't have cable, so I'll be working a sketchy stream to watch it.

I have some bootleg cd's that are not at Discogs yet.
Salvation
Mountain Gold
From this song I didn't knew it exist:
Sunshine superman
First thought when I listened to it: it's not really a Jewel song
Edit:
The back of "Mountain gold" says: Recorded live in Aspen Colorado 1997.
It seems to be a homemade cd. But I can't rp it. I can play it on my laptop. but the files are 1kb and I can't play them if I copy them into a new folder.
-
Sunshine Superman is a cover of the Donovan song that was on the I Shot Andy Warhol soundtrack.
Not sure what Mountain Gold would've been from though so now I'm curious!
Javo are you on Mac or PC? You can't just copy files from the CD drive, you have to "rip" the songs with a program.
-
I'm on a acer laptop.
I will ask my brother sometime, he's good with with this stuff.
I can make a picture of some of my unofficial cd's that are not on discogs.
-
Here the back of the cd's. Last 2 ones are cdr-s, very amateur made.

That would be great! I used to have an Angelfood section on the Wiki that included some bootlegs, but I don't have info on the Mountain Gold one. Scans/pictures would be awesome :D
I need to revive that section of the wiki.

I'm 99% sure that the Mountain Gold is from this show in 1999 (Rocks the Rockies that later aired on VH-1):
http://www.jewelwiki.com/wiki/Concert_1999-01-22_Aspen_CO
Bootlegs like this often have the wrong date information.
-
It probaply is. And it has 5 extra songs on it, not from the show. Like Sunshine superman, you can hear it's not a live version.

Price is Right should hire Jewel to sing the yodeling game someday.

Random question, didn't know where to ask
Did Jewel ever talk about having written/recorded another song called Intuition? Like maybe it being rejected and her having to come up with another, more uptempo song with the title "Intuition"?
Don't know if my question makes sense haha
But well there's another Intuition song, different lyrics, very sensual sounding, very "Bond"
-
I've never heard of another version and she only has one in ASCAP. Where'd you hear the bond vibe one?
-

from a friend, there's no date, so could've been recorded after the version we know (highly unlikely though)
someone ask Jewel! lol

She wrote about 12 different incarnations of Intuition and hated them all per Never Broken, chapter 25.

I was looking up Michelle Branch after her arrest and I found this little tidbit on her Wikipedia page:
In June 2000, Branch self-produced Broken Bracelet, a compilation of songs she wrote starting from when she was 14;the album was released on the independent record label Twin Dragon Records. Its title was inspired from a bracelet made by pop singer Jewel, given to Branch by musician Steve Poltz at a Lisa Loeb concert she attended. Poltz told Branch that "when it breaks, you'll be famous." The Broken Bracelet recordings were destroyed in the Nashville floods in May 2010.

I bought what was left of homie Brian's Jewel collection for sale up there which included a few of the ye olde angelfood cassette tapes. Man hearing the poor quality of the Rare Angels tape through a boom box is so nostalgic. Mad props to whoever put it together originally, because it is really well balanced for what it is.
Edit: the copy of Rare Angels was pretty balanced until the very last track, Cold Song. That last song had a loud, crisp, clean copy and it really stuck out. Like it was an ad. But it was really nice of someone to do that.

I'm going through the plans for a bunch of upgrades to the Rialto Square Theatre in Chicago and all I can think about is that PBS concert Jewel played there. Guess it's time for another run through the ol' 2nd disc of the Essential Live Songbook.
