Keeping track of PUTP sales!
I'm just hoping Jewel will stay in the Top 20 when sales are final! I was afraid she would not even be in the Top 50!

Not bad at all. Wasn't expecting that! :)
I hope you don't mind, fabiojj but I edited your post to make the list a bit easier to read.
-
Cool! I wasn't expecting anything big at all, but to be this moderately successful with relatively little promo is pretty good. Hope the sales keep up. :)

AMEN Sister. :bump:

Would be nice to see Jewel have another top 10 album especially without a proper radio single or music video. Sad that Sweet and Wild was #11 and someone refresh my memory was it in the 30,000s or somewhere around there? She could possibly get #11 again and only sell around 8,000.. Sad that the numbers won't match but that also was 5 years ago!
-
Yeah, according to Wikipedia S&W sold around 32,000. But like you said, that was around 5 years ago when streaming wasn't quite as prominent, and now Billboard counts streaming in their charts because of it. That's why I've tried listening to the album on Spotify or YouTube more than the download on my computer or phone. :)
-
Dang, she dropped down to 18 now with 8,134. At 91% I don't think she's gonna do much better.
-
I can't believe how little #1 is selling. Are these the final numbers? And are these physical sales only? I'd imagine that digital sales would bump the number up a bit.
-
These are NOT Billboard's numbers, those can be a little different, but not much usually. So Jewel is #16, with 11,6k units sold, which is pretty good considering the lack of radio single, music video and very little promotion. Just compare to rest of the chart, the industry is dying! Leona Lewis is opening at #29 and she had way more promotion than Jewel. Top 20 is fine by me!

Top 20! That's pretty good! I really wish Jewel had gone with a major label for the release of this album, imagine what more promo could have done - and I mean print and digital promo, not necessarily a promo tour.
I also wish that proper singles had been decided on and released. My Father's Daughter, whilst a beautiful song, is pretty crap single choice. The only reason it was released was because Dolly Parton featured on it.
Everything Breaks, Plain Jane, Here When Gone, and Pretty Faced Fool are good single choices. Love Used To Be would also have been an unusual and effective single, although it's a bit long. As a promo single it may have been good. They wouldn't have lighted up the charts but a major label would have been able to get some radio play happening to bring more awareness to the album and they'd have been able to play towards the "Jewel returns to her folk roots."
-
PUTP still not available in the Argentine spotify  WHY?
-
Yeah, according to Wikipedia S&W sold around 32,000. Really? I didn't think they counted that. Maybe I should run the album on repeat with my speakers off.

Yeah, they changed it within the last year or so, so it's pretty new. They talk about it here:
http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6320099/billboard-200-makeover-streams-digital-tracks
The updated Billboard 200 will utilize accepted industry benchmarks for digital and streaming data, equating 10 digital track sales from an album to one equivalent album sale, and 1,500 song streams from an album to one equivalent album sale. All of the major on-demand audio subscription services are considered, including Spotify, Beats Music, Google Play and Xbox Music. Current artists likely to benefit from this change in methodology include Ariana Grande, Hozier and Maroon 5, among others, as their streaming and digital song sales have been outperforming their album sales in recent weeks.
"Adding streaming information makes the chart a better representation of music consumption activity," says Silvio Pietroluongo, VP of charts and data development at Billboard. "While an extremely valuable measurement, album sales would mostly capture the initial impulse only, without indicating the depth of consumption thereafter. Someone could listen to the album just once, or listen to one track or a number of tracks 100 times. We are now able to incorporate those plays as part of an album consumption ranking throughout one's possession of an album, extending beyond the initial purchase or listen."
-
Apparently PUTP will fall to #26 if you count streaming and not only sales. I'm not sure if Billboard takes streaming into account, we'll see.
-
They do, but they should have a separate chart for just album sales. I'm on the site right now and can't seem to find it but I'm pretty sure I've seen it before.
Oh, here we go. Had to do a little googling.
http://www.billboard.com/charts/top-album-sales
According to that Five Finger Death Punch was #1, but on the regular chart The Weeknd was #1.
http://www.billboard.com/charts/billboard-200
So, I guess it can be a good and bad change depending on who you like. :shrug2:
Oh, and I think I was getting it mixed up that YouTube counted toward the Billboard 200. YouTube views count toward the Hot 100 songs, but not albums. Makes sense even though it kinda sucks.
-
It's official: Picking Up The Pieces is #18 on the album sales chart and #28 on the top 200. Still alright considering the promo. :)
-
That's pretty good. Imagine what a major label could have done.
-
Wow. Not bad at all.
-
That is pretty badass, for indie and not a lot of promo.
-

-
:woohoo:
YAAAAY!
-
Such great news No.1, and we couldn't gang up on a website and skew the results. :hide:
-
She dropped down to #129 on the Top 200 and #61 on the album sales chart. She'll most likely be out of the Top 200 next week, but that was expected.
-
Wow for an artist like Jewel there really is little money in the music. I wonder if all the preorders on her website were counted toward the sales, wouldn't have made much difference in the end
-
Now she's at #172 on the Top 200 and #82 for album sales.
-
Hangin' on for one more week!
-

I was thinking about this, too, while reading this post. I heard artists make like $1 an album sale (and that was in the mid 2000's IIRC). So, $32K for S&W and like $12K for PUTP.
Wow! I have a company that owes me somewhere around $12K for consulting r/n and I haven't billed them yet because I just haven't been able to get myself motivated to do all the paperwork for the invoice for that amount of money.
And, it was so weird seeing old albums from like when I was a kid (like AC/DC Back in Black) on there. I guess people just aren't really doing the whole listening to music thing any more? What the heck are all the kids listening to on those head phones that they're always wearing? Or is it all just pirated, these days?
I still buy like 5 albums a year.... which is about what I bought when I was a kid.
I just find these numbers amazing. How does anyone in music still have a job?
-
Jewel would be earning more for this release because she's releasing it independently, she'll only have to pay Sugar Hill Records a sum for the distribution but she would pocket most of the rest after she compensated the overlay of course.
It also depends on the artist and how involved they are with the music and production. I know she's not very popular on this board but Mariah Carey was rumoured to be earning $2.50 per album sale in the 90s on her Sony contract. She received $2 for every album sold and an extra 50c per sale for being the primary songwriter (regardless of whether you believe it or not lol). Artists who write, sing, and produce (Jewel) tend to earn more because they do more whereas someone like let's say Rihanna, or Katy Perry wouldn't earn as much royalties because they're involvement is minimal.
-
Right.
And I remember Thom Yorke complaining about how the record companies take most of the profits for themselves, anyway. Radiohead made more money off In Rainbows than any other album of theirs prior to it, and that was the self-produced one they released with that whole Pay-What-You-Want model. http://www.nme.com/blogs/nme-blogs/did-radioheads-in-rainbows-honesty-box-actually-damage-the-music-industry
The sad part is that I don't think these independent models work for an emerging act, which means the current landscape still sucks for new music.

Right on, Code
This has been the #1 bitch about the music industry. People can't understand how Jewel went broke. The artist does get dollars on an album sale, sometimes. There is a ton of overhead when putting out a new album, even when it's self-produced. She foots the bill for everything. And yeah, most of the music kids are listening to - is pirated. Which is wwhy a lot of artists, have stopped making music. It's similar in my idustry and why Hollywood writers bitch so much about being on the bottom of the food chain.
Things like, touring, promo shoots, head shots, lawyers, producers, studio musicians, studio time, tape (or whatever media she recorded to), contributing artists - Kip Moore (he's getting the royalties for PFF), Dolly Parton, Rodney Crowell, and any venue that she may have to cover costs for upfront whether seats sell or not. Like, YWMFM - Poltz gets the royaties for it. So she may be running her ass off, doing all these different shows - she has some big ass bills to pay, just to break even. And don't forget management - which takes, at minimum 10%.
Putting out a book at the same time - just raised all those costs. It's expensive being indie. Trust me. Thing is, at the end of the day, money aside - you have more creative control and input. So, when you see things about buying music or indie/self-published authors, think about it - they're not selling out. The vision in their head is closer to what you see. There is more heart.
I'll stop ranting now. Sorry, but I do it for a living, so I get rolling.
-
Right.

The current landscape sucks. Period. You have to be able to do the math ahead of time. Work out a model that will work. And OMG - stop supporting crowdfunding projects for stupid crap. I saw one for some woman who wanted plastic surgery. She hadn't been in an accident or anything :banghead:
Word of mouth is awesome. It's the best way to get new fans. Plus, what Jewel did. Tour, tour, tour. Be seen. Now she relies on her fan base. Stevie Nicks does the same thing - although, she swings back at the pirates. And really, rightfully so. Keep in mind also, the artist seldom has control over concert ticket prices.
Bck in the day, a mix tape was an awesome thing. You'd trade them with your friends and if you liked a song or group - you went and bought their stuff. Now, kids don't do that. They pass stuff around, sure. But they don't support the artist. :grandma:
Oh, I said /rant :deadhorse:
-
Funny you mention crowdfunding, because I think that's where the future of good art rests.
Up and coming acts get established on Youtube and Spotify and then they crowdfund their next project. It's worked for quite a few acts! If you think about it, it's really the old style of the arts business.

Up and coming acts get established on Youtube and Spotify and then they crowdfund their next project. It's worked for quite a few acts! If you think about it, it's really the old style of the arts business.
Yes. :rofl2:
I meant crowdfunding for real artists and their projects. Not lame crap. I get annoyed with people just asking for money.
And, at the end of all of this - don't forget TAXES!
-
That is the big advantage of making almost no profit, you pay less taxes... so no worries about that for Jewel :P
-
You know, reading this thread now it actually makes more sense why she toured with Rob Thomas and Brad Paisley. It was annoying with the way the Rob Thomas tour was advertised especially because we Jewel fans were told it was a co-headlining tour while Rob Thomas fans were told she was opening for him, and it turned out his people were pretty much right. Having only an hour of Jewel, or less with Brad Paisley, just didn't seem worth it at the time. I went to the Nashville Rob Thomas show and I still call that my first half Jewel concert, not whole one. And now she mostly tours solo. Do you guys think she'll ever tour fully with a band again? Or is that like, out of the question now?

And, it was so weird seeing old albums from like when I was a kid (like AC/DC Back in Black) on there. I guess people just aren't really doing the whole listening to music thing any more? What the heck are all the kids listening to on those head phones that they're always wearing? Or is it all just pirated, these days?
I just find these numbers amazing. How does anyone in music still have a job?
Streaming is the BIG big thing now. Spotify alone has 75 million+ users so between them, Apple music, Google Play, YouTube etc. people have a lot of ways to listen to music rather cheaply. How much they really hurt or help is debatable because some artists wouldn't be discovered without them, but as we can see from this thread there are more established artists such as Jewel who don't really benefit that much. It's still all about popularity, and if you're not as popular then you'll have a hard time making any money.
As for how people in the industry still make money, have you seen any music videos in the last 5 years or so? There are ads galore. Beats music products, that round lip gloss, cell phones etc. It's funny because Jewel was criticized 12 years ago for partnering with Schick, but nowadays advertising in music videos is the thing to do. I guess she was just ahead of the times.
-
You kind of have to separate being an artist and what you do for a living. Jewel does other things to bring in money. Sponsorships (Swiffer, what the hell is the sweetener...), those things bring in a consitent paycheck as long as they're using your image or _____ that you allowed them to use to sell their product. As long as they do, they owe you a percentage that was pre-agreed upon.
A musician that can get a song picked up for a soundtrack can make a good income on one song.
She also writes, and is an artist. So any type of collected or written work could work for her. But anyone that shares a copyright with her, gets a piece.
The struggle for all artists is always the same. Doing what you love, doing what you have to do because not creating feels like dying, and then figurinnng out how much to sell or not sell out. It sucks the life out of everything....and the people that do nothing that look to cash in. Be it promoter, manager, or even fan. Everyone wants their piece.

fun. never got anywhere until they were in that car commercial and they were an amazing band. :(

Ah. Got it.
:grandma: you kids and your new music.

I preferred their first album, but the second one is the one that made it (above.) It's very theatrical music.
They're a local act, so that's a big reason why I'm so familiar with them and The Format - fun.'s first incarnation with Nate Ruess.

I am enjoying the banter between you two, (SMP & Jessica) :rofl2:

Nah... I think that's done. Cause you gotta pay the band... and the crew, equipment set up, travel, etc. And the band has to learn the songs and you have to practice.... and Jewel can't remember her own songs so there'd be no one to teach the band and she'd have to get EDA's to do it over Twitter.
Plus, at least the shows I've been to recently were having a really hard time selling. Even Alanis has been having a hard time selling shows. She commended at one about how many empty seats there were at the beginning of one in a major city.
I think artists need to move beyond that model. One artist I really love, Jenny Owen Youngs, does a lot of StageIt shows and she seems to do really well. Basically, all the hard core fans show up no matter what because it's over a webcam. So, you're not going to a city and getting a few hardcore fans and just like random people that had nothing to do or felt a little nostalgic but really aren't that into the show. Plus, StageIt has a chat room so you can talk to all the other fans during the show and get to know them.
Getting Jewel to do a StateIt would be awesome.
I think that music festivals, like they do in Germany, would be really great too. Because, it's fun just to go some place for a weekend and you could get a bunch of artist from the same era (like Jewel, Alanis, Tori, Rob Thomas, etc, etc.) and you're not like squeezed in with a crowd of drunk people and blinded by like a million cell phones. You can relax and sit on a blanket and have some wine and snacks. (haha snacks auto-corrected to snakes and I was like OMG a snake at one of those would be Pandemonium! :flail: )
I think concerts are kinda going the way of the CD, though. I have been kinda dating this 23 y/o and I suggested we go to a concert at a local theatre in NH that has tons of shows and I got looked at like I was crazy... and, of course, the response was "we could just hang out here and watch one on YouTube".
-
:grandpa:
haha and here are a couple funny videos about those damn kids today that one of my friends sent me to give me a hard time when I complained about the concert/youtube thing:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_2V9Oni2Lk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmRhtStLDNs
The first one is about youtube... lol. But, the second one is so accurate about icons... that generation has like hardly any stars or great movies or anything. It is all just corporate stuff (2nd and 3rd time remakes and comic book franchise movies and mostly pretty bad pop music). I always thought it was a bit of a pendulum and things would swing back away from pop and rap and we'd get more singer/songwriters like Alanis/Jewel and bands like Nirvana... but I don't think so any more. After watching the millennials go through their prime music years I think we've gotten all we're gonna get in terms of music/movies/art from them. More pop and rap to come.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I figure, except I'm sure she can still teach the band her songs. It just takes more time to practice and more money for the band members and equipment and such, and she might not want to do all of that anytime soon. I actually read one interview with Rob Zombie a few months ago who mentioned that his tour setup is SO expensive compared to Jewel who only has her guitar, so with big acts such as his it's never really something you think about. She's lucky in that case since she can tour cheap in comparison.

Man, I hope not. I've been thinking the last year or so how there hasn't been a good rock era in a while, so if one of these popular artists tries to put out a rockish album then hopefully, maybe, there will be at least a small resurgence. Music in general has been so freaking stale. :(

Don Henley recently stated that albums are now merely a promotional tool for touring, as there's so little money to be made from them (if any at all). And when you think about how many units he's still selling - both present day and back catalogue - it's somewhat daunting to think what lesser-known artists are earning.
Comments like his really makes it seem as if the music industry is dying out. If it's not financially viable, and if artists can't make a decent living out of it, then it simply isn't going to happen. The incarnation of streaming services has sped this up exponentially, and for that reason (and countless others), I won't go near them.

Whilst I'm at it, I'll mention that I find it slightly odd that PUTP still isn't released in the UK, and it won't be until the end of the month. I always heard that a long gap was slightly risky, because some people seek out illegal downloads if they can't access it straight away. And you'd think that, with iTunes making it very easy to distribute music globally on the same day, they'd just release it here too. Can't think it will chart particularly high here, as surely most fans will have already ordered a copy from the US?
There's no indication of any bonus tracks to sweeten the deal, either.
-
Yeah, the release date differences are a bit outdated. Anyone know why this is still happening?
It kind of made sense in ye olde days with shipments and all that, but now, I don't understand why it happens.

I think older artists (and I was going to scratch that and say established, but sadly, it is - older), whose fan base is also older -- release albums and CDs for us. Stevie Nicks, had simialr comments to Henley's about the music industry and she put out a record because she wanted to make music and she went on and on, but the gist was the same. Blackmore's Night, actually polled their fans on social media and asked what format they liked most for buying new music. Because, that is how they would release.
I have no idea why the delay in release dates. I know Blackmore's Night released in the UK first, but I think their distributor is UK based. I don't know. I haven't gotten around to buying the new CD yet.
:grandma: rant:
It's all in the crapper. The music and movie industry, as we know it, is going, going, almost gone. In 10 years (give or take), it will be a completely different animal and we'll all be sitting around with our "remember when stories." /rant :grandma:
-
And now she's completely off the charts. Oh well. I guess 3 weeks was ok. :)
-
Hey guys!
Fun fact here!
Jewel's PUTP itunes position:
iTunes:
#54 Bahrain
#78 Cape Verde
http://kworb.net/itunes/artist/jewel.html
So it's doing well in these countries!  ;)

Amazing, considering the screw ups with the shipping internationally.

That's unexpected.

Well it's Itunes, no shipping necessary
