Coming at the end of the year! So far, all I know is there will be a remastered version of the album Spirit with Little Bird deleted because we all hate Nedra and she's on the song. I haven't seen a concise answer on what, if any, bonus tracks will be involved.
-
I'm kinda excited for this! I don't think I realized it would be by the end of the year! I would be surprised if it gets the same treatment as POY 25th anniversary. I can predict a few of the bonus tracks:
Jupiter (Remix edit)
What's Simple Is True (Banjo edit from Ride with the Devil)
Who Will Save Your Soul and You Were Meant for Me (from 2 Meter Sessions, Netherlands) - taken from Hands single
Fat Boy – live from Shepherd's Bush Empire, Down So Long single
Deep Water – Live (from Jupiter single)
Life Uncommon – Live from Sessions at West 54th
Maybe Innocence Maintained from Bits and Baubles / Rocks the Rockies
Down – Woodstock '99 (Best of Unedited)
Amen – Olympia Theatre, Dublin Ireland (Best of Unedited)
Fat Boy / Absence of Fear (Best of Unedited DVD)
What else we predicting?
-
I feel like the glut of Angelfood is between POY and Spirit. They have the entirety of JewelStock to pick through plus the rejected album.
I remember hearing/reading that Can't Take My Soul was properly recorded for the rejected album, but then also rejected. That would be a cool one to trot out. I was p bummed it didn't make the POY cut considering it was on Jewel's very first demo.
-
Can't wait for this one, I hope we get surprised positively.

The big official press release is out!!
Today, singer-songwriter and mental health pioneer, Jewel, celebrates the 25th anniversary of her multi-platinum sophomore album, Spirit, with expanded and remastered reissues of the 1998 release, via Craft Recordings. Arriving November 17th on 2-CD and digital platforms, the deluxe album features the GRAMMY®-nominated singer-songwriter’s Top 10 US hit “Hands,” fan favorites “Down So Long” and “Jupiter (Swallow the Moon),” plus 23 bonus tracks, including eight previously unreleased demos and outtakes, rare live performances from the era, alternate takes, remixes and much more. Additionally, the original 13-track album will be reissued as a 2-LP set, marking Spirit’s first availability on vinyl since 1998. In addition to the black pressing, the 2-LP set will also be available on blue swirl vinyl exclusively via Jewel’s store.
In the mid-late ’90s, singer-songwriter Jewel captured the hearts and souls of a generation with her engaging vocals, folk-pop melodies and introspective lyrics. Raised in Homer, AK, the mononymous artist (born Jewel Kilcher) moved to San Diego to pursue her musical dreams. Living out of her van as she struggled to make ends meet, Jewel built a loyal following in local coffee shops and clubs and soon attracted the attention of industry tastemakers, including legendary songsmiths like Bob Dylan (who brought the young artist on tour as a supporting act) and Neil Young, as well as execs at Atlantic Records, who released her debut, Pieces of You, in 1995. Over the next two years, the album—which featured such era-defining hits as “Who Will Save Your Soul,” “Foolish Games” and “You Were Meant For Me”—gained momentum, eventually selling over 12 million copies and becoming one of the highest-selling debuts of all time.
Jewel began recording her eagerly anticipated follow-up in 1998 (a year which found the artist performing the National Anthem at Super Bowl XXXII and publishing a New York Times bestselling book of poetry, among other accomplishments). Expectations were high as the artist entered the studio with producer Patrick Leonard (known best for his extensive credits with Madonna, as well as projects with Carly Simon, Pink Floyd and Bryan Ferry, among many others). Jewel certainly did not disappoint, as she served up an inviting collection of reflective, vivid songs that were far beyond her 24 years.
Setting the tone for the album is opener “Deep Water,” which offers a hopeful message that love conquers all, even when life gets tough. Similarly, lead single “Hands” is based upon a desperate moment in the artist’s youth when she considered shoplifting. Instead, she decided to put her hands to better use and start writing songs. The uplifting song speaks to the power of seemingly small decisions. “Life Uncommon,” meanwhile, reminds listeners to be brave and stand up to the forces that tie them down. Spirit also features several love songs, including the playful “Jupiter” and the sweet “What’s Simple Is True.” Other highlights include the single “Down So Long,” written when the artist was just 18, as well as the haunting “Barcelona,” which features the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea on bass guitar.
Upon its release in November 1998, Spirit was an instant bestseller, debuting at No.3 in the US, where it was certified 4x Platinum. The album also peaked at No.2 in Canada and No.5 in Australia. The hit single “Hands,” landed at No.6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the Canadian pop charts.
The album was also acclaimed by critics, including Rolling Stone, which declared Spirit “musical comfort food.” Entertainment Weekly praised, “The way Jewel’s voice dips from a mountain-stream soprano to a vulnerable lower octave in the chorus demonstrates what a stronger, more confident singer she’s become,” while Music Week hailed “Hands” as “a delicious, softly-sung number, showcasing this talented Alaskan’s songwriting skills.”
25 years later, this special reissue of Spirit offers a deeper look into Jewel’s creative process through a trove of bonus material. Among the eight previously unreleased tracks are demos for “Last Dance Rodeo” (which later appeared on 2006’s Goodbye Alice in Wonderland), “Gloria” (off 1999’s Joy) and “The Sue Lee Song”; outtakes and alternate versions of “Hands,” “Songs of Freedom” and “Jupiter”; plus live recordings like “Down,” captured at Woodstock ’99. The album’s expanded content also offers highlights from a 1999 concert at Spain’s Colegio Oficial de Medicos de Madrid, plus rare live performances only available as single B-sides, including “You Were Meant for Me” and “Who Will Save Your Soul” (both culled from the Dutch program 2 Meter Sessions in 1996).
Speaking to the 25th anniversary of Spirit, Jewel says: “My sophomore album, Spirit, is 25! I still cherish this album and sing many of these songs during my shows, so I’m glad my fans can pick up new copies and hear some unreleased tracks, outtakes, and live recordings. I also get to share this with my son now - it's incredibly special to tell him stories about what was happening in my life and the world during this time. Whether you heard Spirit back then or are just discovering it now, I appreciate you listening.”
In the years since releasing Spirit, Jewel has continued to inspire through her music, words and voice. During her nearly three-decade-long career, she has released 13 studio albums (six of which were in the Billboard 200 Top 10), published five books (including her 2015 New York Times best-selling memoir, Never Broken – Songs Are Only Half the Story), and earned 26 nominations for such awards as the GRAMMYs, American Music Awards, MTV Awards, VH1 Awards, Billboard Music Awards, and Country Music Awards, winning eight times. Jewel has also dedicated herself to pioneering change in the mental health space, offering mental health tools and resources to those who need it through her Inspiring Children Foundation and Inner.world, a new virtual mental health platform.
In 2021, Jewel captured the ears of a new generation when she won the sixth season of Fox’s hit competition TV series, The Masked Singer. Later that year, she appeared on The Masked Singer Christmas Singalong, where she performed “Hands” with her then-10-year-old son, Kase. Most recently, Jewel released Freewheelin’ Woman—her first studio album in seven years. Produced with Butch Walker, the 2022 LP earned acclaim from the likes of American Songwriter, Spin and AllMusic.

This is no different than the original release. I have one of those, still unopened. I had a record store connection at the time & only paid cost for it - $6.98. :neener:

Cool, man! I'm surprised the old vinyl left off Little Bird as well. I thought it was on there. I'm not really a vinyl guy, so I never bothered with it.
-
Down from Woodstock is possibly my least favourite version of the song. She just sounds so tired... Wish it was a better version. I don't know if it's copyright issues, but I was hoping for more vault tracks... we know there are plenty from the album sessions... Oh well, still excited for some of this.

Same
I was expecting more alt takes from the released tracks
But I wasn’t actually expecting this to be released, I was hoping though
So I’m happy with it 🙏

Oh, my bad...it is on there. Listed in tiny, tiny print as an additional track.

I did pretty good on my predictions. 🤣
Obviously looking forward to songs 9-18 on disk two since they're all previously unreleased. I am a little curious the Enter from the East Solo Acoustic Outtake and what it's from. Maybe previously on Unedited or something.
❓ Jupiter (Remix edit) - alternate version has me curious if it's the remix edit or a completely different one.
❓What's Simple Is True (Banjo edit from Ride with the Devil) - not sure if it will be the banjo edit from the credits or the soundtrack (p sure they were different)
✅✅ Who Will Save Your Soul and You Were Meant for Me (from 2 Meter Sessions, Netherlands) - taken from Hands single
✅ Fat Boy – live from Shepherd's Bush Empire, Down So Long single

❌ Life Uncommon – Live from Sessions at West 54th
✅ Maybe Innocence Maintained from Bits and Baubles / Rocks the Rockies

It's cheaper to pre-order the deluxe CD on Amazon right now than it is the digital version: https://www.amazon.com/Spirit-25th-Anniversary-Deluxe-CD/dp/B0C84NS3L2/
I just pre-ordered for 15 bucks. That's a very fair price for a two-CD set! They have the standard black 2 disc vinyl with only the original Spirit tracks (sans Little Bird) for about $30.00
For $80.00 (plus shipping and packaging), there's a blue vinyl available that will come signed. This one can be ordered on the official website: https://shop.jeweljk.com/products/spirit-anniversary-vinyl
I have too much signed Jewel stuff, so I'm gonna pass on that personally.

Jesus H.! That's about twice what I'd think would be reasonable. Pass!
-
 that's the same comment all over other forums about the vinyl! 80.00 is more than the market wants to bear. There are only 500 available and plenty left to pre-order. Last I saw, it hadn't even topped 50 pre-orders, but that was a couple days ago. And I guess i'm not sure how true that is, but I read it on a subreddit filled with absolutely obsessed vinyl nerds, so I kinda believe them!
-
And especially for someone like her, who at least used to sign stuff all the time...only a newbie amateur would pay extra for a pre-signed piece like that. It's ricockulous. I won't be surprised if they're on clearance in the web store w/in 6 months. I might buy one for $40 then & keep it stowed away w/ my unopened original pressing.

All songs from spirit 25th anniversary has been uploaded to Jewel youtube channel (see link below).
If all these songs are uploaded in youtube, isn't this will make many people will not buying the album (CD, LP, vinyl, digital audio) (they can listen to it on youtube instead of buying the album) ?
So does it really a good idea to upload those songs on youtube?

Most new albums are posted to artists YouTube channels now. Better to get streams and revenue vs not. People who will buy will buy regardless.
-
"fill your mouth with mental slavery and you shall lead a life uncommon..."
Did I hear that right? The little lyric tweaks in Songs of Freedom versus what Life Uncommon eventually became are something else!
EDIT: It might be "free your mind from mental slavery..." but it sounded all weird the first couple times.
-
So this is pretty cool, but nowhere near as cool as the POY anniversary release. I really think adding four live tracks from the first album wastes a lot of space on here. I think the two Madrid recordings of WWSYS and FG were on a Spirit Aussie release or something, so I understand their inclusion, but the other two weren't so great that other gems that really belong in the era couldn't be included. For instance, Absence of Fear was always a crowd favorite during concerts and Jewel really got into it, so it's a shame one of those couldn't be squeezed it in instead of that 2nd WWSYS. Does Anyone Believe in Love Anymore debuted during this tour and could have also been a real treat for hardcore fans and filler fans alike.
I'm glad this was priced reasonably, though. Wandering seems like a song for the Sweet and Wild era and the Beeswax Operatta improv song to finish it up was a cute little treat. Seeing the evolution of Life Uncommon and Hands is academically interesting and both are great inclusions. I love Last Dance Rodeo, and the boombox version feels weird in the record, but I like it anyway as a novelty.
Overall, I give this 6/10 - glad I got the CD, but there's not gonna be a lot of replay on my end. The rating stays over 5/10 just because Spirit was a banger of a record back in the day, but below 7/10 because of the wasted space. A full 17% of the bonus tracks are from the last record, and that's a bit much. So much of the bonus material is from the same televised concert in Madrid, too. It just doesn't seem like there's as much heart in curating this particular collection as was put into the last one. It doesn't flow as well and the disparity in recording quality can get a little glaring. This is especially true with The Sue Lee Song. It's almost disruptive how poor the vocal recording is compared the Enter From the East that precedes it.
I sure am grateful for the Angelfood I have from this era already, I'll tell you what! I think I'll give JewelStock a spin to scratch the itch.
-
I have similar feelings, Jess. I love hearing the new stuff, but with I'm left wanting more. At first, I thought Enter from the East was repeating when I listened to The Sue Lee song – just similar guitar pattern (Travis picking?). I think with 4 CDs for POY set a high bar for this release. I really liked hearing Barcelona live. I think for hardcore fans, this one was tough because there were so many tracks that we've heard before.
-
Yeah it's like the same chords and everything! It's pretty rough. Might as well slap Grey Matter in the same run while we're at it.
And you know, if those two songs wouldn't have been right by each other, it wouldn't have been so bad. Scootch Sue Lee to after the LDR Boombox bit or whatever and that would have hidden how comparably rough the vocal recording on it was, but putting it right next to a painfully similar song just accentuates the shortcoming. I understand including some version of it to mark the Ride With the Devil era, but oof it's harsh where it is.
-
I have an all acoustic version of Barcelona played in Ghent, Belgium that would have been cool to have on here all cleaned up and clear.
That same show had Jessica. I get the feeling that song might make a comeback if the energy for it stays up.
EDIT: I did it!! I fixed a show tracklist on the wiki all by myself!! :fun: :thomdance: :mchammer: :monkey: :sammy:   :wow:
-
I just ran the credits on Ride With the Devil to be sure: this is NOT the soundtrack version of What's Simple is True that's used in the film. Not sure if it's what was on the CD
-
I asked Alan about that on Facebook. He said it was the version from the soundtrack but not the banjo one from the movie itself. I think that would've been better since this is so close to the regular version.
-
So I haven't visited here in a while. This re-release made me very happy at first, but I agree that there isn't a lot of new stuff for die-hard fans (like a lot of us here). I will buy the LP and the CD both. Would love to have the signed double LP in blue as well. But importing from America is hell over here. Even when Jessica send me a gift I had to pay more import duty's then the LP costed. I could make a case out of it but that would have cost me more then just pay it.
-
i agree with most of you here
even if im not a jewel fan since the beginning, some of these live tracks and very similar tracks (hands radio & whats simple is true movie version) seem redundant when theres SO MUCH material out there
me personally, i loved the hands studio demo and would love if they could explore that route more... demos with alt lyrics and/or raw vocals & different production
-
Finally got a chance to listen to most of the CDs on my road trip this weekend. I skipped quite a few tracks bec. they didn't seem new or unusual to me at all. The main thing I took away from the experience is a reminder of how much I loathe the non-word "drownding". :shrug2:
I will say, though, that 'my' song still makes me a little weepy, even after all these years. And the vocals on Enter from the East - esp. the chorus - still floor me.
-
Hi All
On Little Bird - they could have kept the song with just Jewel on vocals . and deleated Nedra vocal track
Greg
-
Lenedra had the melody so it wouldn't have worked.
I'd have kept it full and put it on the LP, but I'm the only one who feels that way.
